My pup can't control his bladder in the evening?

Hey all,

I'm new to the board, having just adopted my pup about a month ago, he's currently a day shy of 5 months. We have him in a crate overnight (and he does great) and we have him in a crate during the day (which he also does fine in) but as soon as my husband and I are home in the afternoon/evening, he can't control his bladder at all. He pees in the apartment all the time within 90 minutes of the last one, usually. (no poo though, only does that outside)

We've tried taking away the water after 6 or 7PM since he has water in the crate during the day and night, but he gets freaked out about the lack of water and paws at his water dish incessantly.

It is really cold out right now (nothing like an Alberta winter..) but this issue has been around since before the snow came, so I don't think that is the issue, though it certainly isn't helping.

We got a bell and I hope that works, but are there any other ideas about what might cause this?

Savannah is my smaller one, she wasn't reliable until 6 mths. I tend to think it is an age/maturation thing with some shelties. It might be an excited/distraction thing. Just reinforce the expectation and limit the area that he has. Make sure you make outside potty a BIG deal so he gets that is the desired location. Savannah could be dry in her crate all night from early on, and she was a dead to the world sleeper. But getting her to not have issues during the day wasn't easy. She could look at me and just go. I never had issues with my other 3, just her. I thought she would NEVER be potty trained. I would have her checked by my Vet and he would say she was fine physically. It was hit and miss, not ever consistent. She had to go outside in winter and I really think she didn't LIKE to. Hang in there, I think it will come if you just keep at it. Make sure the areas are cleaned well were the accidents occur.

I think that's pretty normal for a 5 month old puppy. If it does seem to happen a lot, you may want to take him to the vet to rule out a UTI. (Just because he can hold it in his crate doesn't mean he doesn't have a UTI, FYI).

It's probably because you are home, he's excited and has other things on his mind. And before he knows it--oops!

You may want to go back to potty training 101 in the evenings. That would include watching him like a hawk, taking him out every 30-45 minutes, HUGE praise when he potties outside. If you can, interrupt him while he's peeing in the house and rush him outside to finish--and reward him. Another idea that others have used is to tether him to you with a leash--that way he's right with you and you can monitor any signs of him having to go.

Ahh..Puppies :)
I had gavin potty trained by taking him out every 45 minutes at night. Basically trying to make it as difficult as possible for him to not go outside. He also got scooped up whenever he even showed signs, and carried outside. The trick is to carry him on his back cause dogs won't pee on themselves! It was a long month

It's not a little bit of pee.... haha

I've been trying to take him out every hour but sometimes he doesn't last. It's near -30 out so neither of us want to go out more than that! But I'll take the extra good treats out for the next while for praise!

He doesn't seem to have any signs, just pees at will...

My pup is about 4.5 months old.

He finally got it about two weeks ago. And we've not hand an accident since. He never peed in his crate or xpen, but when I let him outside he would often empty half his bladder then get distracted. Then come in and pee inside. O I learned to bring him out again 10 minutes later. Now, not necessary. The other thing, when pups are on the move....e.g. Playing, etc it triggers the bladder as well. So make sure you are diligent about taking pup outside shortly after dinner and after play time. If pup continues to pee in the evening, then you need to crate him when you can't watch him.
