My sheltie chews her paw nail(s)

The Kwik is inside the nail and barb is correct on the longer the nail the kwik is growing right along with it on the inside so the longer nail longer kwik, shorter nail shorter kwik. I admit one of mine right now has longer nails than she should they are not horribly long but too long and I have had to just resign to the fact that atleast once a week I have to dremmel the heck out of them till just about the kwik is showing (I cant bring myself to cut the kwik although I know it would be a quicker process). ive been doing this for 2 weeks now and they are getting better but still not there...infact now that its been brought up im off to go dremmel!!!

My female often chews her nails and licks her paws. I suggest you visit a vet as there is probably an underlying problem.

After a visit to the vet I found out the licking was from allergies. I was also told that nail chewing can be due to a fungal infection so the vet told me to get some (human) antifungal liquid like peveryl from the chemist. It works.

BTW - my female also has black nails so I cut them very week - and I shine a torch through the nail so I can better guess where the quick is (have only cut it once and ice stopped the bleeding)
