I am so sorry to hear of your loss. You asked if it gets better - it does.
We lost our first Sheltie at almost 16 years old. We picked her out at 7 weeks and brought her home at 8 weeks.
I was in shock when she died, even though I knew, and the vet told me, she was not going to live much longer. It took us almost 5 years before we got another Sheltie. Having Ariel has brought back memories and we've even looked at photos, but I have to say although I had tears in my eyes, I didn't cry. I'm able to think and talk about the myriad of cute habits and special memories.
It DOES get better. Give yourself time to grieve, it's okay. You'll always have the memories and in time they will make you smile, not cry.
