Natural Ability to Herd

I've had one Sheltie, Rusty, who had never been trained in herding, but he knew what to do and when to do it and understood the command of "Herd 'em!"

We noticed this when our female Rotties were "wrestling" in the back yard one day and Rusty kept looking at us like he was expecting a command. So, I said, "Rusty, herd 'em!" and he began to circle the girls and move them away from the fence. Of course, the Girls cooperated, LOL! But I've seen him herd children into line (I am a retired elementary school secretary) at my job-Rusty and Taylor used to visit the school on a regular basis. One day the kindergarten teacher was having difficulty getting the children to line up, so my husband gave Rusty the command to herd and he (Rusty) did the job well!

Remarkable breed they are!
 
My German Shepherd likes to herd Treader in the backyard. I would like to get both of my dogs tested for HIC. I just don't know anyone near St. Marys, GA who does HIC testing...
 
Almost forgot about German Shepherds having that ability, LOL! Watch too many police shows!

Do your babies respond to the words "herd" and "sheep?" Rusty (dearly departed) did and so does my Sparky. I've seen Sparky sometimes try and corral the other Sheltie, Max, by herding him along the fence line. Max hasn't figured it out yet, LOL!

There is a lady in Florida, not sure how far that would be- Plails Sheltie Ranch- Nina Plail who does herding and performance. She has a webpage I believe.
