Natural always better?

So GeeRome, I freeze all the fresh meat that I get for my dogs (hunters, farmers and soon, from the trapper). I was told that I should NOT feed my dogs fresh meat due to parasites, and that I should freeze it all for at least two weeks to kill them. What are your thoughts on that?

By the way, this is a great thread! Lots of great information for everyone. Thanks for starting it Ruckusluvr!

Yes, for wild caught meat or meat from unknown (uninspected) sources, it should be frozen for a length of time to kill parasites. Internal parasites are not a huge concern for most farm raised animals now, but wild animals (from hunters, trappers, fishermen) is still fair game and should be frozen before feeding.

I usually freeze for 3 weeks to a month, "just in case". Grocery store meat, I don't bother freezing, as even the "fresh" stuff was frozen during processing and transport anyways.

Whoa, I never would had guess that this would get so many posts! I am glad I started it myself :) *pats shelf on back*

Everyone is so helpful here!

Still having trouble really decided for myself what is best for my dogs. Ruckus has always been on natural food (taste of the wild, and diamond naturals), but has skin allergies, excessive shedding, and chronic colitis. That is actually what got me wondering enough to start this topic/debate. The vet of course is recommending a Science Diet food, or Iams healthy naturals.

I think Lynn could eat crap and dog just fine (not that I would feed alpo or anything like that)

I'm really fond of the high protein, grain-free - Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Innova Evo. My guys are doing great on this. I think this is an excellent substitute to raw. Orijen has a "sister" product which is not so heavy on protein - but it's name escapes me at the moment.

My two cents worth - again! :biggrin2:

I get what i can afford. I am not ashamed to admit that taste of the wild is the most expensive i can go.

Did I mention I used to feed the Wendy Volhard natural diet? Ruckus lost weight, and couldnt keep any on him. Very low energy too. However I know that the Natural Diet is nothing like raw.
