Nestlé Purina Buys Merrick and Castor & Pollux Pet Food

I've been using Fromm Five-Star (not grain free) for almost a year now and have been very happy with it. I've switched the dogs to a rotation diet through the From Five-Star foods. If you want grain free, Fromm has grain free options in their Five-Star line.

I hadn't seen this, thanks. Merrick is one of the foods I've liked and recommended to puppy people. This is very disappointing. Mine eat Fromm but it seems all these small, family-owned companies can be gobbled up by conglomerates. Ugh.

They don't want the competition, and that is what BOTHERS me, because the family enterprises usually are all about quality, and the conglomerates are all about profit and LACK quality control standards lately. I try and support family-owned businesses with everything if possible. But it is getting harder and harder these days. Does it bother anyone else that these big conglomerates see pets as an industry and as their latest bottom line increaser? :gaah

We've been using Merrick since Oberon was about 5 months old. Now we'll have to switch him again. Any suggestions? He's almost a year, no known problems or allergies.

I put both the girls on Fromm...they have done great...Kaleigh is off, Savannah will be soon since her puppy days are almost done...but I liked the reps I spoke to, they were very helpful with my ??? and concerns, but what impressed me the most, is they never bashed other foods. Some of the other company reps attacked their competition.

I have fed Addie Merrick since she came home to us (minus the adventures in trying other brands). It was always Merrick that we came back to. It has been the ONLY one that does not cause an upset stomach. Granted, the other brands we tried were fish based, not chicken or beef based.

I am not comfortable feeding her Merrick any more. Not even the canned food. We bought the last of the Merrick kibble & cans just before they announced the merger and I have spent days looking at other foods. I keep seeing Fromm mentioned.

Has anyone fed the From 4 Star Nutritionals Beef Fritatta? Do yours like it? How is the kibble size? Merrick has a smaller kibble and it is easy for Addie to chew. The TOTW and Solid Gold were larger and she just swallowed it whole (which also probably contributed to upset tummy).

It makes me sad about this whole Purina deal because her coat is just beautiful and she is healthy and a good weight for her frame. I will not feed a food from Purina

 Kaleigh was WEIRD about size of kibble, and I think it was the teething process, smaller kibble seemed easier to chew for her. I have used the lamb and the beef frittata with great success on both girls. They liked both. Fromm has samples-you could call and ask where it is sold in your area and see if she likes the samples. That way you don't have to buy a whole bag...

I like them already if they have samples!! After Addie started getting sick on other brands I asked Merrick if they did sample bags, and they said no, but I could just exchange a bag if she didn't like it - but I still had to buy the 4lb bag which then went to waste because ot was opened.

This is probably going to sound silly but one thing I love about Fromm is that every variety has a different shape kibble. when you're feeding 5 dogs who eat different kinds and you're not paying attention at feeding time (ahem, guilty....) you can sometimes get the wrong one in the wrong bowl. With Fromm, I can tell when that happens. I like like that their kibble sizes are small, and their puppy varieties are perfectly sized for Sheltie mouths.

I feed the Gold varieties but I've used the Four-Star flavors and all of mine love them. I haven't found a variety of Fromm they don't like.

Not silly at all! We feed 2 varieties of Acana and they look almost exactly the same. If you tilt them in the light then you can SORT OF tell that one is browner than the other  but it's such a pain if I'm not paying attention.

I find the lamb shapes kinda freaky, Savannah likes to line hers up occasionally before she eats them, I would love to know what goes through her head doing this...
