New AKC CD- Diva

I finally got the videos done. Yeah!

The first one is Diva's CD run.

She got alittle distracted on the off leash heeling but came back with no extra commands. I guess see was sight seeing. Duluth is a tourist town. Oh by the way. I forgot to mention the tall ships were in the harbor and they were shooting cannons! Yes cannons!! every couple hours outside. The DECC center is right on Lake Superior and the tall ships were a street and 2 sidewalks away. It wasn't too loud to me but it sounds like big booming firecrackers a couple miles away. However, one time one of the big doors was open and yes it sounded like a cannon went off. Dogs started barking all over the building. However, proud to say not one of our dogs barked. How weird was that. Shelties not barking.:smile2::lol:

I didn't tape the stays which in Novice is 1 minute in sight sit stay and 3 minute in sight down stay.

Is there anything better than watching a sheltie work? Diva looks amazing!

It must be a requirement that a sheltie bounce when released between exercises  I think it's my favorite part to watch. "YAY! I DID IT!...ok time to pay attention again."

I also love watching the dumbbell retrieve. Is that super hard to teach? It's very impressive.

Thank you. I started working on the retrieves when Diva was just 4 months old. Basicly I just wanted her to get excited when she saw it. I shaped it first look at it , then touch the bar with your nose ,then open your mouth and then take it from my hand, then reachup , lower your head , reach to the side and finally on the ground and then thrown. I worked on the hold part seperately I put the dumbell in her mouth and had her bite down. I use a clicker when she would tighten her grip on it. I would also hold her collar and ear(lightly no pressure) and release it as soon as she took it. I swear she didn't even know I was doing it. But if I hold the collar and then touch her ear she wants to retrieve. That is my correction now. But to tell you the truth I only have to use it once. Taught right they love to retrieve. Then I added the front and finish. All taught seperately. It took 9 months to teach the retrieve and 2 yrs to perfect it.

Ember I taught the same way it took her 6 months. 5.5 months to actually willing take the dumbbell and 2 weeks to perfect it after she decided her could do it.

Justcie took 5 mins. He took it from my hand the second I presented it and was doing full room retrieves in 5 mins with cute little puppy chair fronts and he was holding it too. He was 11 wks old, man was I spoiled.:smile2: Its no wonder I love that dog.

oh that is so awesome!!!!
YAY look at her go
She does love your motion a lot, doesn't she? Gets more excited when you walk faster, she must hate the slow stuff! lol

yes slow frustrates Diva which I think was part of the heeling issues. She wanted to keep going ahead. She has been the hardest of my shelties to teach to heal. The only dog who was more difficult was Jazz, my Jrt/beagle mix. I chalk that up to the methods(chain collar J&P) I used back in the 90's It was not motivating to a terrier/hound mix if you know what I mean. Diva has such nice quick sits though.

She'll get it just needs more seasoning. I 'm starting utility training soon and that she will love. Lots of stuff for the dogs to do. Really when I think of it, I already have her doing dead retrieves on both the metal and leather articles, hand signals in front of me, glove retrieves(just 1 glove) and directed jumping(from a sit). She knows the moving stand for the most part and the turns from rally. Go outs she will love- its run fast as you can to a target and sit when told. Hardest part will be articles.(I may tape that so people can see how I teach it.)

Dr. Shelli, that is simply remarkable! I love the leap of joy -- you two are such an amazing team! Congratulations to Diva from all of us at Nattering Springs. :biggrin2:
