New Epilepsy Information

For those of us with Shelties who suffer from seizures or epilepsy, I've found a terrific new resource for information, and a new food regimen that seems to be working for my Pixie. It's www.dogtorJ.com . A veterinarian who specializes in natural cures through diet, he recommends the elimination of all the obvious things we've heard, such as wheat, gluten, dairy and barley, but also suggests a DUCK based food rather than chicken or turkey for epi-dogs.

There's way more information on the website for anyone who'd like to read it, but the simple principle is the elimination of aspertame found in turkey and chicken. He recommends specifically **** Van Patten's potato-based duck formula, which I've had Pixie on for a month now with great results. The food, combined with the natural flea and tick repellant I'm using instead of the chemical stuff (Sergeant's Natural Defense) is working well and she's had no seizures! The other thing I like about this food for her is that it's fairly low in fat, even though it's a potato base, since I have a tough time keeping her trim.

Hope this helps!

Ann, that's wonderful!! I'm so happy you found it and Pixie is doing well. So far, I don't have that particular problem, but I'm sure there are others here that it will help too.

Thanks for posting this information, Ann. I am so glad the change in food is working for your Pixie. For now, I’m going to save the web site since Spencer is holding steady. Dare I say it: No seizures since mid-December 2008. I’m feeding him Wellness Core, plenty of fruits and veggies, a hard-cooked egg 2 to 3 times a week and All Natural organic beef jerky for a training treat. And let us not forget all the meds he is on. - Kbr (qd), PB (bid) and Zonisimide (tid). My life revolves around Spencer’s med schedule. So it’s pretty much no seizures since the Z kicked in and right now we’re not making any changes. The Neuro said since he’s doing so well, keep everything the same. We see his regular Vet on Tuesday and I’m having titers done on him in the hopes his immunities are right up there and we can avoid unnecessary vaccines. Again, thank you so much for providing another source of info that may help our epi-pups.

I'm so happy to hear that Pixie is doing well with the changes in her diet and the elimination of flea and tick meds and using the natural sources. I also have changed Kia onto the natural flea and tick spray soon to change to the one you place on the neck region. I don't want to give her more meds than necessary.
Jan I hope all stays well for Spencer as well. It has to be horrible to see them have seizures.:cry:I will keep all the Furkids with seizures disorders in my prayers.

Jan, I'm thrilled to hear that Spencer is doing so well! I would definitely not change anything that's working. I'll keep my fingers crossed that things continue as they are for you. Thanks, Elaine, for the prayers too...the seizure thing is tough for sure. We're lucky we seem to have it under control at the moment.

I'm happy that you have figured it out for Pixie too! I think you are on to something with the chemicals and the reaction! It wouldn't suprise me one bit.

This is great to read! I'm so glad that Spencer is doing well. I know he had you so scared for a while there!! Hugs to you both!

Thanks Ann. I have a friend whose Sheltie was recently diagnosed with epilepsy so she will appreciate this info. Only problem is it is really hard to get Duck based dog food in Australia - my dogs love Duck.
