Saw this posted today from a breeder I follow. I did reach out to Dr. Gookin and she was quick to respond. We can't participate, but if you can, or if you know someone who might qualify, please pass the word!

Newly Funded Study on GALLBLADDER MUCOCELES in Shelties - please spread the word and encourage participation!

AKC Canine Health Foundation #03367; Gookin JL (PI), Van Landeghem LC, Seiler G, Clark LA (co-I).
How genetics, environmental exposures, and the enteric nervous
system influence gallbladder mucocele formation in dogs. 02/01/2025 – 01/31/2027, $149,525
In Aim 1 of this study, Drs. Jody Gookin and Leigh Anne Clark are teaming up to determine if there are any DNA differences between Shelties that develop gallbladder mucoceles and those that don’t. For the DNA analysis either a blood sample (preferred) or DNA from a cheek swab can be used.
We are looking for two groups of Shetland sheepdogs.
1) Documented by ultrasound or surgery to have a gallbladder mucocele.
2) Documented by ultrasound to not have a gallbladder mucocele and ≥ 10 years of age.
“The NORMAL Shelties should be at least 10 years of age and not closely related to dogs with mucoceles or to other control dogs. If your older Sheltie has had a recent abdominal ultrasound for any reason and images were made that document a normal gallbladder, we would like to review the images and determine if he/she could qualify as a control.
If you have an older Sheltie and can commute to NC State in Raleigh, NC or to Texas A & M; M College of Veterinary Medicine for ultrasound scans, we can arrange a free screening ultrasound. We cannot cover costs for screening ultrasounds performed
elsewhere. Depending on the veterinarian doing the scan and image quality, dogs scanned elsewhere might be eligible for inclusion.”
The AFFECTED Shelties can be any age and will need to have ultrasound-confirmed evidence of a mucocele (images can be sent to Dr. Gookin) or have undergone removal of the gallbladder because of a mucocele (images and surgery/pathology report can be sent to Dr. Gookin).
If interested, please contact Dr. Gookin at [email protected] .
Be able to send a copy of the dog’s pedigree.
