Whelping puppies is not for the faint of heart. Diva's first litter, the first one out came breech, his foot got stuck by what turned out to be a huge dewclaw. Diva was so wimpy about pushing but when he got caught she went into overdrive. I actually couldn't move him and his foot was turing blue so we jump into the car to go to the clinic for a c section. I was so scared she was going erupt her uterus she was pushing so hard. I pushed up and in with one hand out as a last ditch effort and I guess between that and her pushing he popped out in the sack and placenta and all. 9.5oz puppy for a 13.5" bitch.
I was sure he was dead and Diva had no idea what happened just the whatever it was was gone. I started working on him and yes gave mouth to nose CPR and he came around and let out 1 huge squeek. Diva swung around like "what is that?!" and immediately started taking care of him. He lived and is now 17" tall and living in California. His name is Porter and you can see a picture of him in my friends album. The whole litter was named after alcohol because after that start I really needed a drink.I had whelped many litter before but that was my first personal one. Good grief.
Gosh, that's unreal. Our first bitch to have pups, Pippa, was a complete natural and I think it spoilt us. She was born to breed, she would just be sitting there and would stand up and there would be a pup. She had 4 within like half an hour or something like that. She barely had time to clean one before another would come out. There was no hassle at all to her, it was like something she did every day.
We wanted to call one of hers (the show name) By the Hall Lamp or something but we couldn't get it to work because she was mated in the hallway in front of the lamp. I'm not sure if mum didn't close the door properly or if the dog opened it himself (which he later proved he could do) but she came down the stairs to go to work and there they were. Poor Pip cried the entire time and mum cried with her. It was her very last day in heat and still had 4. She does eventful matings and easy birth, Lacey's the other way around
