New Member - Sheltie Nerd

Shelties are great with cats, I've always had both. My current female sheltie actually prefers to play with her cats than with dogs. Only thing you will need to do is to give your cats places to get away when your sheltie is a puppy, puppies can be full on for anyone. They soon learn the cats are part of the family.

Years ago I had a cat called Tommy who grew up with a Sheltie. When the sheltie died we got another puppy called Benson. When Benson was a pup Tommy used to keep Benson in line by smacking him with his paw whenever he went past. Well as Benson grew up he thought the smack-down was a game and so he started swatting Tommy with his paw whenever Tommy went past. As you can imagine Tommy was not amused - of course we all thought it was hilarious. Only thing was that Benson used to get so sad when Tommy jumped the fence and left him in the yard alone - he'd try and try to jump the fence to follow him. They really were best buds.
 
I am owned by Cooper and the Belles. Cooper is almost 8 months old now. He desperately wants to be friends with my cat Simon. Simon doesn't share his enthusiasm. HOWEVER- Simon LOVES the Belles. All three of the girls- he adores. He plays with them, bounces them, cleans them. I don't really know what his issue is with the puppy. Other than maybe Simon is just a ladies' cat. I have a funny Simon story though. We used to have Bonnie. Bonnie came to our house when she was 12. She didn't rough house with the cats as much as Annabelle and the other dogs. Well, Simon came running down the hallway to pounce on Annabelle. Mid-pounce he saw that it was Bonnie instead of Annabelle. So he sort of tried to divert the pounce and wound up bouncing down the hallway on his back feet to not make the mistake of pouncing Bonnie.

My other four cats get along with all four of the dogs. And My Annabelle (sheltie) and Caruso (Cat) are the best of friends. To the point that they ALWAYS are together. The both sleep on my legs at night.

This is so like Rupert with Shadow!! He cannot understand why yipping earnestly in Shadows face has not made them fast friends. Lol! Shadow has swatted him in the face a few times, hopefully they will get along!! Right now Shadow just ignores him. Rupert does not understand it because as a puppy, before he came to me, the breeders cat played with all the puppies!
 
Sheltie are fantastic!!! I den't have a cat but apparently they get along by
the posts that you are reading. Sweet, smart, compassionate, etc. etc. etc.

They are so easy to train, and train us to their ways also My DH thinks I am
really trained. You will have a lot of fun with a sheltie. My Lil' Lady loves the
bathroom. When my husband comes out of the shower, the towel is damp, she
rubs her body off on it when he hangs it up.

When my Lucky here, he would stare at you when your in the bathroom and
at times lock himself in there. So cute, funny and a joy.

Hi! i have recently adopted a gorgeous sheltie puppy.
Because my partner who loves animals and cats was much more reluctant to get a dog. i made sure i did lots and lots of research to convince him and made a shortlist of breeds that suited our lifestyle; two creative freelance professionals living with two cats (they own the house) in a mid sized town house.

We met and completely fell in love with the Shetland sheepdog and would never consider another breed!

Now, we have only had Gordon in our lives for 9 weeks but i can say that he is quite scared of the cats. He wont walk past them if they are in the corridor or on the stairs. In fact he rarely leaves the couch if the cats are in the same room. I don't feel like he anxious about it because he is quite content napping on the couch and sometimes naps on the floor. The cats on the other hand like to swipe at him and chase him and i still wouldn't trust the cats with him untended for more than a few moments. The cats will tolerate him for the most part but every now and then they like to assert their dominance over him. He also likes to bark at them. His tail wags, so its not an aggressive or anxious bark but i can tell he is confused because he wants to play with them but doesn't understand why they don't feel the same way. That how i understand it at least. The annoying thing is once he starts barking hes really difficult to shut up. And the cats just staring back at him doesn't help one bit. .... anyway. i don't think they'll be best buddies for a while if at all, but they will get better at tolerating each other. And we will get better at giving the cats more attention. I trust that Gordon wont harm them at all ( im more worried about the cats hurting Gordon). He is a dog who buries his head between two cushions like an ostrich if the cat comes too close!
 
My two are like brother and sister. Love to play and love to fight. But at the end of the day they both do love each other....

That's a very adorable picture Cleo. Who said cats and dogs don't get along lol. I had a cat years ago and I found that they don't like change but will slowly adapt to the new situation, just takes them awhile. They'll come around and get along with Gordon in time.

wow i'm so impressed. i can only dream of my cats letting our pup sleep that close to them! i worry about leaving them in the house alone in case the cats are too mean to him :sadsmile:

This is Gavin with his Kitty Wisper..she passed away about 5 years ago.
She ruled the house :)
