New Puppy Pottie Training

I am a first time dog owner with my goofy but happy Sheltie, Kirby. I have read everything out there that there on house training a puppy....he still pees and doodles in the house. i spray vinegar after clean up but my house is starting to smell like potato salad. I take him out after he eats, plays, sleeps, sniffs..etc. He will go when I take him out but he will not let us know when he has to "get his sparkle on"; we have to initiate it and hope for the best.

Is this normal? What am i doing wrong? We have had him for about a month now, we have taught him to sit, lay, fetch, and high five.....so I assumed he would pick this up pretty easily.

Help!

The Art of Raising a Puppy by The Monks of New Skete was recommended to me by Chris and it was the best puppy learning resource we bought.
I would recommend it for the housetraining piece alone :smile2:
I think that just like us human kids with potty training some puppies seem to care more about it than others. Our little gal very quickly picked up "go pee" and will now do so on command...and only on grass. It's kindo of cute actually.
That being said...she also would pee in the house if we were not watching for each and every sign that she was about to go...this is where the crate training is so wonderful. I keep thinking we are there with the potty stuff and then she surprises me with a little unexpected squat. Yesterday she went to the door for the first time and hubby and I did the happy dance.
I would also suggest picking up a product that is made for deodorizing and removing pheromones. Vinegar is a good natural cleaner but I am not sure that it removes the pheromones...which makes the old pee spot one to revisit. Maybe vinegar does this, although I have become puppy pee obsessed these past few weeks I am certainly no expert.
I guess your house could smell of worse things than potatoe salad :wink2:
Good luck...

If house-training fails, I've learned to take the position that it is the owners fault, not the pup.

Until the pup is trained, you have to have your eye 100% on the dog. As soon as they start to squat, you scoop them up and throw them outside. If they complete the job, then praise and treats.

Hopefully, though, you can catch them before they squat. Verbal cues are great! Go Potty! Be quick! And as soon as they do go, praise and treats.

Its just when we start getting confident in their training, that they fall apart on us. You turn your back for one second....and a mess. And that's why I blame the owner (that is, myself!!)

I finally learned to be super diligent. I learned Bacca's schedule and made sure that I adhered to it. Gradually over time, as he matured, I was able to adopt him to my schedule.

Clean up - Vinegar is not enough. As was already mentioned, you need a stain and odor remover, else they will continue to go the same spot.

My Pup at 9 wks

Hi I had my pup last week at the age of 8 wks she is a very small size and can actually get through the stairgate which i purchased to keep her in the kitchen when i went out but could still interact with my other dog through the bars. Grrr lol she gets out every time. I had a crate for her but she only used it for the first two nights . We have her in our room at night and after the second night she stayed put in her bed next to my side where i could fall asleep with my hand in her bed so she knew i was there. after the second day she started to slip in with my other Dog to sleep too and is very happy. After about 5 days she always pooped in the garden but she still wee's in the house if i turn my back. but she will go in the garden on demand now. i have learnt when she might want to go after sleep, play.food etc and it's worked. she gets praise and a treat when she goes outside. I feel she is a very clever little girl but i do look forward to when she can hold her bladder as i'm sure she knows where to go but just can't hold it and doesn't know how to tell me . But back to sleeping through the night. we go to bed at 10pm she stays in bed until about 1-3am then it's out for wee's, back to bed then at around 5am she gets up and we go out for wee's & poop. She is such a good girl and i haven't needed the crate really. she is so much more happier this way i think. or maybe i'm wrong!
Don't know how to add a pic or i would :confused2:

Gilly: your pup (and you!) are amazing! None of my sheltie girls and boys learned the 'potty idea' so quickly. Kudos!
