New to natural food diets. Where to start?

Spirit weighs 11 pounds and gets 2.2 oz of a raw beef mixture that includes fresh vegetables and fruit twice a day. She's really done very, very well on raw, but always seemed to have an upset stomach on kibble - regardless of the quality of the food or the protein used.

Checking the pantry to see what we have in pumpkin. Mostly, we have pumpkin filling. Don't think that's what we want to give him. Appears to have additives, sugar, etc.

Also have several cans of "Pure Pumpkin". Seems to be 100% pumpkin. No other ingredients or additives listed on the label. Gluten-free. I think this is basically what we're looking for. Does that sound right?

Yes! That is what I give Cleo. I use that in her food every day.

Yes, the pure pumpkin is what you want. I usually add about a tablespoon to Spirit's meals.

Good time to stock up--pumpkin's on sale here now.
How's he doing with his dinners?

Eating whatever meat we give him very enthusiastically. Seems a little reluctant to eat vegatables or fruit, but trying them so far. We fed him a little pumpkin for the first time tonight.

Any treats we offer him, or foods he used to like, mostly get ignored.

There are many raw feeders out there who don't feed any fruits and veggies because they are not a part of a wild dog or wolf's diet. They can't digest them unless they are cooked or pulverized. Point is don't feel too guilty if he's not eating them with gusto. No onions, raisins, or grapes--supposed to be toxic.
You could try switching to jerky treats if meat is the primary motivator now. I used to buy them at Costco but then another China poisoning scare and I started making my own.

We've tried a couple different beef jerky or meat treats. Not eating them any better than the ones he's used to. He'll sporadically show interest. I think most food either smells or tastes funny. A lot of times, he'll pick up something in his mouth, then either drop it before he chews or let it drop out after a couple chews. We can't be certain, but we're guessing it doesn't taste the way he expects.

Oops. I accidentally edited out his weight. He weights around 29 lbs. Could probably stand to lose some weight, tbh.

I'll look into getting a food scale. Don't think we have one. We've been breaking the meat into small bits so it fits in the measuring cup more easily. Sounds like we're in the right ballpark, though. Given his rate of decline, I suspect we won't be doing this for very long.

My dogs are on raw. My 27lb, very active, very fit 4yo eats 3 cups of food a day as maintenance. It is half meat, 1/4 "grain" (rolled oats, brown rice and beans, or quinoa) and 1/4 veggie (finely chopped parsley, green beans, etc and coarse chopped carrots).

I am planning on going back to bones this summer, but these are rescue dogs so I want to make sure I am home to watch carefully how bones get introduced back in.

my girls eat squash, all types-they love it...cooked mashed carrots, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, cooked cabbage, quinoa, cooked veggies-whatever is in season, zucchini, rice, cooked oats, barley, the unprocessed type, meat is mostly lamb, bison, trout, venison, quail, grass fed beef, and duck. I don't feed them chicken as they don't do well on it. I limit turkey, and they get eggs occasionally, along with goat cheese. I give them yoghurt daily, and I also add a teaspoon of organic vinegar (Braggs) to their food. I eat tofu occasionally as well as wontons and they love that, too. Savannah likes bananas, and both like watermelon. I cook stuff in a presser cooker or wok because it is fast and easy(olive oil only). I freeze what isn't used. I still use my baby food grinder, now it is for the fur babies. :biggrin2: Kaleigh is WEIRD about texture and size of her food. She likes smaller sized bites, ever since puppyhood. I make stocks for soup and that is frozen in ice cube trays, for later use...I add that to their food for the nutrients in bone broth because I think it is important. The meat they get is not raw, it is lightly browned, because I can't face giving them completely raw, I am too squeamish for that. It isn't cooked through by any means.

Anything can be daunting at first but once you acquire experience, it becomes routine and manageable. I cook for my girls because I want to control what they eat, and I want to know what they are getting. And because I had a Vet that promoted any food substance other than what came in most dog food bags. He is fanatical about it. I just found a liveable balance. I think that is what everyone needs to strive for.
