New to the forums - plus, how do you choose the right rescue?

Hello, all. I am new to the forums, but not new to Shelties. Unfortunately, I am currently not only Sheltie-less but dogless (and catless) as well. My 17 year old 12 pounder, Neechee, died last April and I've needed this time to come to terms with that (he went suddenly after a third stroke). I'd had him since he was 6 weeks old (I know better now), and he was my constant companion - even going to work with me.

I'm going through a local Sheltie rescue and have been approved as an adopter, but I've been in a quandry. How do you choose? I want them ALL.

Hi and welcome, Jaynie! First oif all, I am sorry for the loss of your furkid -- it's hard, but Shelties always help!

I would recommend you meet the 3-4 you are most interested in. Ask about health and history. If you love them all, I would select the one that best fits your lifestyle: Active? Laid back? Is barky ok or a problem?

Welcome to the Sheltie Nation!

I would definitely meet the different possible Shelties, get their backgrounds and see how it would fit with your lifestyle!

Good luck and I am sorry to hear about the loss of your Sheltie.

Welcome aboard, Jaynie. Sorry for your loss of Neechee (love the name), but glad that you are actively looking for a furbuddy.

This forum is notorious for encouraging multiple shelties per household --- I haven't caved in yet --- so perhaps there's a pair of shelties out there that came in together with your name on it !!!

Welcome Jaynie. Sorry for your loss of Neechee. It took me about the same amount of time to be ready for another furry after loosing Klee, my first, in July, 2009. I'm sure Neechee will help guide you on your journey too, but agreed to find the best one or more that fit your lifestyle.

Best of luck and please keep us posted!!! We look forward to happy stories and pics of your new furry face. :smile2:

Both risk and trust.

Wow, can I ever understand your loss, having been there on two occasions. We have adopted four Shelties over the years. The most recent three have come to us through the good offices of Minnesota Sheltie Rescue. They have absolutely wonderful people who know/understand Shelties and are extraordinarily skilled at matching the right Sheltie with the right adopters. When they have recommended a dog for us, they have been right on target. We could not be happier with the choices they have helped us make. My advice is to trust the advice of experienced rescue people. They want the best possible situation for both humans and Shelties and want the adoption to work on a permanent basis. Of course there is always risk, and when adopting a rescue there will almost always be "baggage" that the dog brings with them. A good rescue group will always inform you about the "baggage" and make sure that you are equipped to deal with it. -------------------- We wish you all the best in your decision making, and we know that there will soon be the right furkid to make your life more whole.
