newbie question

Related, but a little off topic....

Indy is registered with AKC, but under his original owner. She gave me the forms, but I never bothered to transfer him under me, as I knew that he was going to be neuteured, and no chance of a further "career".

Does this matter?

Do you mean the registery has the kennel name?? not one you picked out??
That doesn't matter...I know alot of breeders want their kennel name on the registery...then if something ever comes up with that dog..the breeder may be contacted?? Theres prolly other reasons too..but in any case makes no difference what the registered name is...you can call your dog anything you like..not just whats on his papers...

When you said he's still registered "under his original owner", do you mean the paperwork still shows his breeder's name and address?

Technically, that doesn't matter since he's a not being shown in conformation or performance events HOWEVER it does make the AKC registration database, and therefore the tracking of the litters, in accurate. (Though I'm sure your are not the first one to not bother sending the information.)

THAT is another issue entirely. Honestly, if you aren't going to compete in any AKC events, you can leave the Registered Name alone since the only name that will really ever be actively used is the shorter "Call Name" (aka the names we all use daily for a beloved little friends).

Changing the AKC registered name requires a specific form and the signature of the breeder that it is OK with them to change the registered name. There are other rules around changing the name also, the biggest one being the animal in question could NOT have any litters attached to their name.

When I first brought Edan home I thought about changing Registered name. (It was Casia's Pistol Pete - Pete was his Call name.) At that time I did talk to her about it and she said if I could find the paperwork to do it and wanted to pay the fee she had no issues with it. Well, that lasted until I started to fill in membership forms for Agility organizations and then got his CGC certificate in the mail with "Casia's Pistol Pete" printed on it. I looked at that paper and all that went through my head was "That's not my dog". The good members of Sheltie Forum helped me find the right form to change his registered name and all his breeder asked before signing the paper was that I keep her kennel name in his name (something I was already planning on doing). Thus he became "Casia's Celtic Fire".

I got to choose my dogs registered name. My breeder only required that her kennel name be first and that she approve the name I chose. I know some breeders who register the puppies themselves to assure they do get registered. What has been others experience?

The other fact I think I left out of my story was that Edan was 7 months old when I brought him home. He was a Show Prospect that didn't show well because he wasn't built masculine enough for the judges. Because she was showing him, he had to be registered.

My breeder didn't require anything. she just had the limited registration box filled in. Bailey's AKC name is Madam Basil Cunningham

Phebe is a limited registration. The breeder's only requirement was that I include his kennel name.

Yes, that's correct. I never bothered because my contract required that he be neuteured, so he was out of the breeding circle anyway.

I only ask because if someday, I decide to do agility or obediance, will that be a problem if he is not registered in my name? I'm not sure if these trials are for purebred only or not (excuse my ignorance!)

My breeder fills in the first part of the name with their kennel name and then let's us fill out the rest. She encourages us to send in the paperwork, but really does not have any follow through to see if we did. I waited to send in Chloe's paperwork until she was microchipped, so I could send in her microchip information in with the papers. But...I may just send in the papers for Dandie now....and send the microchip info later for Dandie. I am a lunatic lately and am afraid I will misplace the form, lol.

An AKC show...would require AKC papers. They do not require the dog to be handled by it's owner, though.

I am not sure about the other venues.
