NO fence discussion

It is a damn shame.

My parent have an 11 acre property. They adopted Sandy some 11 years ago. (he was a lab/greyhound mix, and therefore born to run). They just never let him out with a leash or a tie-out. And when he finally got more mature, they trained him to a whistle.

Heck, my cottage property is unfenced. I let the dogs out on their own, but I check them ever 5-10 minutes. If they are not in sight, I know their favourite places and can hunt them down pretty fast.

I hate the thought that potential great parents are being screened out becausse of this requirement. I know there are many on THIS forum in apartments and townhomes....
 
There are good pet parents who have fenced yards, and bad pet parents who have fenced yards:

I have a fenced yard, but in 15 years, my boy never went outside alone, not once. Whether it was raining, or -15F, I always went with him. I have a chain link fence with a bottom rail, and a padlock on the gate.

In contrast, a neighbor had a fence with an insecure bottom and an insecure gate. Her dogs regularly got loose, and she never did anything to fix obvious flaws in their fence. The end result was that one of her loose dogs bit someone in the neighboorhood. (They have since moved.)
 
Some breeders, not just rescues, insist on fenced yards. I would not be without a fenced yard, with a lock on the gate, just to keep my dogs and others in the neighbourhood safe.
 
Thank you for replying guys! I have met CISR director and she is "old hat" in rescue business and very savvy about dogs and humans lady, I have utmost respect for her and her work. She moves more dogs in one year than other rescues in all their existence....
So I have my faith in them. BUT I think the more people post the more we will see changes going around.
I am not regretting getting my dogs from breeders, but I also could have been great home for a rescue and I was not given even consideration, so that is where I see a big flaw. Had I known that WI or MN rescues do trust people with no fences I could have gone there and would not have my 2 monkeys...
 
I think a fence is a good thing but I have a neighbor with a fence that I wish would never have a dog again while we have members here who spoil their pups silly and live in an apartment. I can see a rescue asking about a fence and adding into the overall assessment for sure but not as a veto.
 
My next door neighbour has a fully fenced yard the dog still gets out and runs around the neighbour hood 2-3x per week. She is a rat terrier and super fast....bad dog owner:confused2: nicest lady in the world!
