I am agreeing with everyone else and saying teach sit as well as stand, down etc. I have heard a lot of 'show' breeders say that teaching sit, heelwork etc will just mean that the dog will do this in the show ring, but as everyone has said, dogs (not just shelties
) are smarter than that. Revel competed sucessfully in both breed and obedience and never confused the two, as did several other shelties I know.
Yogi was taught the basics including sit, down, twist etc and would stand like a rock in the ring.
Unfortunatly having dual confirmation and performance dogs is comparitively rare over here, but I think it boils down to a question of time and priorities for most people.
