not wanting to train

Shelby's mom

Shelby and I are taking a rally class. We are really enjoying it but Shelby will not practice at home. I take her out on her leash with lots of good treats and practice the stations we learned that week. She will just decide that she is done and she will plant her butt on the ground and not move for anything. It is like she is saying this is really stupid I know what I am doing. She does this after less than five minutes of training.

So tonight I stoped numerous times on our walk and would make her practice. (the neighbours probably think I am crazy). She has never acted like this before and she doesn't do this in class. Only at home.

I don't understand it.

:yuckyuck
does she pout when she sits down?
this sounds too cute, lol

Dogs don't generalize well, you may have to up the ante on what treats you use when you're home to increase the value to her of working with you in other areas with all these distractions and things she doesn't 'normally do'

My neighbours definitely think I am crazy, I carry different types of dehydrated liver and lung and tripe pieces on me... (and cheese in a bait puch)

Maybe try to engage her before doing the exercises, so I use a warm routine of readyyyy steadyyyy.. nose touches or play a rousing game of tug, before settling down to do some 'work' I use certain toys/treats only for high value stuff... to ensure focus on me.. so for agility his highest value squeaky ball comes out ONLY for agility...
Plus she's still young, isn't she? I keep training sessions at 5-10 minutes with either calm or play time in between sessions. Nothing worse than souring the fun of training

Just some ideas, hope there is something helpful for ya in there

make it series of less than 3 minutes and make it a lot of fun before and after?

Thanks, I will try keeping it shorter and more fun see how that works. When we get to the trainers house she is very excited to be there and participate in class. I think maybe she doesn't like being on her leash in the yard. Maybe I should try off leash in the yard.

Off leash might work, too. My shelties have not worked as well for food, as they do for attention. Lots of excited "GOOD BOY/GIRL" seems to have worked as well if not better than treats. Good luck.
