Our 7 year old female has developed an excessively oily coat. It began when she came home from the vet hospital. We had intervened during a coyote attack which left her throat badly damaged from crushing and puncture. She spent a week in the hospital, and recovered very well. But a week after she came home, it looked as if someone had bathed her rib cage (right behind her "elbows") with cooking oil. We bathed her frequently and when itching developed I tried Head and Shoulders and it gave her relief. After a few months she seemed to normalize.
Then at the end of summer, we moved to Vancouver Island and during the move her problem came back. Children's benadryl seemed to give her some relief for the itching. But she hasn't returned to normal. If we don't bathe her frequently, she has a rancid odor. I let her go for a month so I could take her to another vet with her full symptoms.
Her cousin/sheltie who is from the same, highly respected breeder and is close in age has a beautiful healthy coat.
Three vets have given us no answers except to state the obvious. Her blood work is normal (especially thyroid).
Sheltie Forum has given me great help in the past decade and I'm so glad to see that it's still running! I would be very grateful to hear from other owners who recognize this problem and could tell me what remedy worked the best.
Thank you,
MaryAnn Hardy
