I have had dogs all my life from Cocker Spaniels, Boston Bulldogs, minipoodles, Irish Setters, Bordercollie/german shepard mix-- our first sheltie came as part of a promise. Our uncle who loved shelties was diagnosed with cancer and wanted a sheltie after his long term furbuddy died. He was worried that he would not live long enuf for the dog but we promised that if it came to that we would take the dog and he knew we were dog people..lovely to be trusted that way. He was famous around the town where he lived for having Mac in his bicycle basket as they rode around town and the dog was with him everywhere and everyone knew them both. After nine years it was time, but now he was living in Fla so Mac was shipped up to us in the NE- Boston airport is a mess and it took hours before we were able to get Mac and his cage into our car. He was beautiful and full of spunk and we loved him. He was a barker tho, thunder miles away, telephone, everything- a bit much but so cute and a great little dog. We were never his true buddy tho he and the uncle had such a bond and that was never broken, we were tolerated but he just never looked at us with those looks that shelties give when they are truly bonded to you. Mac started having medical issues and was diagnosed with congestive heart problem and one day after a visit with the vet and some new med we came home, he never was OK. He ended up dying in my arms that night. I held him as the light left his eyes. It still hurts to remember that night. We had him for 3yrs- in that time we had moved for work to another country so he was with a house sitter for nearly a year-- we were never his true people but he was well treated and loved. After that shelties were the breed I wanted and we got our second Sheltie some weeks later from a local breeder and never looked back. I loved all of my dogs for what they were but Shelies are my heart. What a difference our second Sheltie was -- he was the sweetist calmest sheltie ever inthe ever ever. He was merle with a lot of brown in him?? We named him Mac after the original Mac and all of our Shelites since have had the prfeix Mac- with a few exceptions. We have been in love with the breed ever since and love the bond we have with them... They have such personalities.. our house is so quiet when they are not here- they were off to the groomers the other day and I was like a parent with a kid on the first day of school..
