I hear you on the ear stuff....you're using somthing different from what I get but it's a mess and not fun to put in and affects their hearing and I hate it. I'm glad Piper's hearing loss is temporary and yay for the attitude change in the vet receptionist!
I give Lacey 10 mg of Pepcid every night before bed with an unsalted saltine cracker for acid and it really does help. She also gets 15 mg of Cerenia (1/4 of a 60 mg pill) before breakfast which helps her appetite. I swear she gets more meds than me, and that's saying something!
