Our First Workshop!

Cruz and I will be attending an Intro to Agility workshop on April 19. It will be my first ever dog sports workshop, and am looking for some tips to get the most out of it. Specifically, how to keep 7 month old Cruz engaged for 4 hours? He juuust makes it through 1 hour classes each week.

I wish I could help but we have the same problem keeping Pippi (7 months) engaged during our classes. We also have just started foundation agility classes and loving it. Good luck!

I would suggest taking a crate and blankets to cover it, so that when you are not running he can rest inside, maybe even sleep a little. It is good for them to learn how to rest between runs too.

Remember lots of good quality treats, I usually take a mix of cocktail sausage, cheese and chicken. Take loads! You would be amazed how you go through them, and don't feed him before you go so he has an appetite.

Depending on what motivates him, take a toy or a throwable treat bag (I use a Lotus ball, but any soft treat bag you can seal and throw works well, some peope use fluffy pencil cases). Avoid a toy that squeaks unless you are working alone, else you may be unpopular with other handlers. I often have a range of toys in my bag, so I can swop them to keep the interest.

Make sure you have a nice long lead (nothing worse than trying to do something and not having enough lead!).

Most importantly, as he is a youngster, take plenty of breaks and watch for signs he is becoming overwhelmed with information. These can be scratching, sniffing the floor, or suddenly losing interest in what you are doing (but not because of a distraction). At that point your pup needs a short break to give his brain a chance to process what he has learned. Rest him in his crate. Hopefully there will be lots of chances for him to rest during the workshop, but if he does shut off give him a chance to chill out, rather than attempt to push through it. You might even find a short walk away from the class will help.

I did a 3 hour workshop the other week with Merlin, and though it was mainly the handlers doing stuff he got very tired and it was obvious by the end that all the dogs were exhausted. So you might not get as much practical work done as you would like, but I am sure you will get plenty of stuff to work on at home.

And, of course, enjoy!

Everything labgirl said was spot on! Take lots of treats (different valued ones) and don't be afraid to take breaks when Cruz needs it. You may miss out on something, but that's okay. Take notes and you can try it on your own later.

Enjoy!

bring your video camera/tablet/phone so you can have someone record your exercises.
it's amazing how quickly you forget what the instructor told/showed you how to do something.........:eek2:
with the video, you'll be able to review it anytime:pop

Crate is definitely a must for the pup when it's not your turn.
don't forget some snackies for you too....

Thank you all for the great advice! We will be bringing along our soft crate as well as LOTS of treats. I also may go out this week for a couple more toys (as if he needs them!) Many of the other participants are around Cruz's age so I'm sure we will all be in the same boat in terms of pups needing rest and breaks. Chris will be coming along with our camera to record all the exercises as well as take Cruz out if needed (so I'm not missing anything). Very thankful for a supportive hubby!
