we are going out later on to buy Belle a martingale collar.. I still don't know what it looks like, when I think of martingale I think of horse martingales..

at any rate, I want to get rid of the choke collar, and need something that will not slip off, so I am thankful to learn of the martingale. Our local Tysol carries it, so Belle will be wearing her Thundershirt when we go there, and eating a gingersnap beforehand so she won't get carsick (hopefully)..

I have learned so much in the short time I have been at this forum, and am very thankful for all who partake.. :yes:

so we went to the Tysol.. turns out the martingale collar is what used to be called a "gentle choke chain".. and happily, Belle did not get carsick there or back.. I sat in the back seat with her beside me..

That is GREAT news she did not get sick.

You will like the martingale,they are nice. Trapp wears one,it is braided leather.I ordered it from a company.Still hav'ent got Jasper one yet,as I am waiting to see if he is done growing.

I'm sure the thundershirt helped in the car ride.Which is awesome.Mia wears hers all day.

She will now stand still when I put it on her,an will stand as well when I take it off.The first few times,taking it off,she got scared,as it fastens so tightly with velcro. She could feel me pulling.But now,I really think she is so at ease with it,so very grateful to them for sending one to her.What a change.

She no longer sleeps in a tight fetal position,she is relaxed when she sleeps,and now even naps in the living room,without the comfort of her crate or x-pen.Before..she would have never even laid down on the floor,only if she was in her crate or pen.So for us..awesome!
 
that is good news that the Thundershirt is helping Mia..

I will be leaving Belle's on her during the day after she has her spay/hernia surgery on Jan 3 and recovers from that..
 
I don't know the Tysol brand, but if possible stick to a rounded collar as opposed to a flat, and keep it below 1/2 inch in thickness.

You lose the advantage of a martingale on a Sheltie if the collar is too heavy and thick. A round collar will nestle nicely in the fur without matting. A flat collar, particularly one that is too wide will still work for control, but won't help fur matting.

I did look at the rounded leather collars, but didn't see a martingale one.. the one we bought Belle is less than 1/2 inch.. bonus that it is reflective although I didn't know that until last night when I walked her after dark.
 
I'm going to have to go slowly.. husband is not excited to spend more money on Belle right now especially with the costly spay/hernia surgery coming up on Jan 3. but I do like the look of that collar..
 
I agree - less than 1/2 inch is perfect. Some other martingales that are 3/4 or 1 inch are just too heavy against the fur.
