I don't measure anything out, but it's probably under a cup worth of chunky mixed veg. When I'm lazy I just do a handful of frozen veg cooked (literally a handful that I chuck in a container and microwave)

Hi - I’m relatively new to the site with a year and half old sweet sheltie, on the addition of vegetables, it looks like raw works well but are cooked (boiled, roasted, whatever) veggies ok? I tried a couple raw carrots and he looked at me like I was nuts but seems to like some boiled carrots that are softer…..thank you!

Teddy is about 17.5 inches at the shoulder and during COVID went up to 31 lbs by cutting food to 1/3rd cup twice a day and using raw or boiled veg's and lots of daily walks in 8 months we got him to the Vet recommended weight of 25 lbs. And he is still losing on his own his last weigh in was 24.7 lbs.
It's hard to say no to those eyes but you need to Be Strong :)

Cooked veggies are fine, steamed or roasted probably best as boiling removes a lot of vitamins etc. Mine all love raw veggies but they would scarf up cooked ones as well. A lot of folks use green beans.

Veggies cooked or raw are great. I just mix them in with their food. Don't overcook them, it reduces the nutrition as Sharon said. Favorites are shredded carrots, green beans, broccoli, kale. I've thrown them in frozen from the bag as long as they're diced. For weight reduction, French cut frozen green beans from the bag are wonderful and they love them.

I chop all my veggies in the food processor and add them to their food (I feed raw). Dogs digest food much faster than we do so in order for them to get all the nutrients from the veggies it’s better to chop them fine. Raw is best of course but cooked is ok, you just lose a lot in the cooking process.
Lots of veggies that you can use, broccoli is very good for dogs as are green beans (frozen or canned or fresh just use the no salt canned ones). There’s very few vegetables my dogs won’t eat with the exception of maybe red/yellow peppers Piper hates lol!

Thank you to everyone for the advice! I need to chop/shred the veggies as was suggested, (I think)….he could care less about green beans but was liking the broccoli….I will work on getting my profile updated as well. This is my second sheltie, my first I was able to adopt when she was 7….she lived until she was 17 and a half and went to heaven this past May. Liam was 3 months old when he came to live with us - really made Scarlett’s last 10 months much better. We have been pouring a lot of love into Liam….thanks again and I’ll keep you posted. Appreciate the support!!

Follow up question re feeding my Liam - working on getting his weight down - he is 1 and a half, very active, multiple walks a day and at least two ball chasing/catching sessions a day in backyard - moved from 1/2 cup a day to 1/4 cup a day 3 days ago… tried adding veggies in all forms mentioned and he is not interested at all!! When he looks esp pouty about it, We get some more exercise. I have Dr Marty’s (he likes), Instinct raw (in freezer - he could take it or leave it) - and Fromme adult for small breed kibble. Can you confirm that Fromme and/or Dr Marty’s is fine at this point? Which of these three is best?? And I will continue to make veggies cut up/shredded - he may well eat them if hungry enough as long as I stay strong. He is at 25/26 lbs and should be closer to 21 or 20. Just neutered in June and we lost his great aunt in May…. I didn’t realize what was happening weight wise til vet appt a few weeks ago….Thank you again for your advice and support.

Those are all great foods, Mary. You can't go wrong with any of them. I don't know about the raw food since I don't use it, but what you'll want to look for on the other two is the percentage of fat content in the nutritional list on the bag. I know that "small breed" foods tend to have higher fat content than others. You'll want the food that has the lowest fat content while your boy is dieting. I feed small breed food too and know that can be an issue when they're portly, so the fat content is something I keep an eye on.

I wouldn't worry too much if your boy doesn't like the veggies. He may tell you otherwise, but he'll survive just fine on the amount of food you're feeding him. Do try chopping the ones he likes, it will add bulk to his meal if he'll eat them and make your life easier. Good luck, stay strong and keep us posted!
