Ann Thanks so much for the Giggle. I'm sure it's not funny, I can only imagine the tough work it takes. But the hamhocks line got me. Good luck I know you'll get it. Great idea to practice in front of the mirror.
my first show was a disaster!! First of all I have never taken any handeling classes, there are none near by, second the day of the show it was pouring down rain!! and of course it was an outdoor show They did have a small tent where the ribbons and ring stewerd was so they put the table under it, unfortunatly it was a small tent so guess who was partially outside, with a waterfall of water coming off the tent! needless to say I didnt place at all that day but I still had fun and I didnt expect to win anyways.
Knowing I would never have the patience to train myself to show a dog, I admire your willingness to stick to it and learn, even with the frustrations and mistakes on your part. Have fun - that's what makes it worthwhile (as well as the ribbons etc). If you can't enjoy what you are doing and your dog doesn't enjoy it, my feeling is that it is not a right fit for you. Sounds like you have a positive attitude towards enjoying yourself and having fun while you are learning.
I sympathize with you. I can't clicker train because I can't "click, command, and shape" at the same time. My parents didn't even give me Grace for a middle name, let alone any physical grace.
That all being said....you will get it. Checkers is so graceful and intelligent, she will help you right along. It looks sooooo easy!! But I know a lot of time and dedication go into it.
If I can do it, you can too, Chris! What I really love about this is the one-on one-time with my dog...it's such a bonding experience and I can tell that Checkers really loves it. Since we, like you, are a multiple dog household, I think it's great to have something special that we do with each dog. I'm very lucky in that Checkers has already been wonderfully trained for the show ring by Tofupup (thank you thank you, Megan!!) and all I need to do is not fall on my face.
Stay tuned....I'll keep you posted on how things go, good or bad...I'm looking forward to the experience! I think....
I think you are going to be a terrific show dog handler, Ann! You love Checkers and she knows it--all the details will come together in time.
I am really looking forward to hearing about your adventures in the ring, and maybe even seeing you and Checkers do your thing at a show one of these days?!
