PA agility weekend

Dang, you crazy dog lady:lol: No wonder why you need a weekend off at times. The things we do for our doggies. But yep! My mom is still coming to the AKC show, she's just not going to run Blitzen.

Honestly, it's very rare when I do more than 2 trials in a month. I TRY to keep it to 1 a month. August is interesting though...

CPE - hosted by my agility club and I attend all three of our shows annually.
TDAA - I usually skip this one because of WCOTC's show but with the Petit Prix coming up, being on the committee, and trying to get Edan in position for TACH5 I need to attend.
AKC - I attend WCOTC's Labor Day weekend show every year.

It would have been nice but, as you probably saw, we were picking up a new home away from home for Edan and CJ (a new trailer) plus we had company on Saturday since we needed help with some tasks we had to do.

Sometimes I have to give Glen a weekend with no trialing so we can get things done around the house. :o

YEAH! So I get to see your mom and dad at the Teacup trial and then meet you the following week at the AKC trial. (Yes, I'm doing both.)

August is a BUSY trial month for me with CPE this week, TDAA two weeks later, then AKC the following week. TDAA and AKC are both 3 day shows. (I'm trying to set Edan up to earn a TACH5 at the Petit Prix.)

I did see the pix of the new trailer- looks nice. post many reviews and pix when you start using it:yes:

Lovely to see your videos, congratulations on your runs and wins. :biggrin2:

So how many rings are there normally at the shows? I'm curious because at most of the shows I've been to there have been a minimum of 2 rings and generally 4-6. I've just been to a championship show where there were 11 rings, that was an eye opener for me and lots of people were using bikes to get around :eek2: (another piece of 'agility' equipment LOL!!) I know people running more than one dog say shows this big are a headache due to getting to the right ring for course walking and running, especially when the dogs are in different grades.

I guess the show is indoors because it is too hot outside? How do you find running on carpet compares with grass? It looked quite grippy but lots of UK dogs struggle when running on carpet because only a couple of shows a year (Crufts and Discover Dogs) have this surface.

Just to give my 2 cents..
Majority around here you see 2 rings, if you're lucky. In Virginia, it's very common to only see one ring and be there from 8am until 6-7 pm. Most trials in USA are going to indoor turf shows. Not necessarily because it's too hot out, but because it takes the weather out of the equation. In Virginia however, a lot of the shows are still outdoors, but they don't have shows from June until September because of heat.

I prefer running turf, not slippy, not muddy and my shoes handle it better. I've fallen numerous times at outdoor trials due to weather conditions so turf beats it any day!

I show mine at both indoor and outdoor shows and they have never seem to have an issue adjusting to the surfaces, but I could see where that might be an issue. But, I also train both outdoors and indoors so that might help.

This particular show site was built specifically for dog trials. It's in Pennsylvania so not as hot as it would have been if it had been here in Alabama.
the turf is the most grasslike that I have been on- compared to the indoor/outdoor type carpeting at other indoor sites.
I think the shelties did all right on it- I didn't notice any slipping issues.

the shows that I have been to have only had 2 rings- some shows running both rings simultaneously and some alternating between the rings.
I have had conflict issues with the simultaneous rings running two dogs in different levels- I find it very stressful and I think it's one reason we have had issues with qualifying at those trials.
I don't think I could compete at a trial with more than two rings- if I did, I'd have to only enter one dog so I could concentrate on doing well with that one.

the majority of the trials that we go to in the south are held in covered, open air horse arenas with packed dirt surface. so we can still compete even if it rains..... walking your dog between runs might not be so fun then....

we practice outdoors on grass- we've only ever practiced indoors when in PA- at the club facility that my friend belongs to- and then at this trial site since every Thu evening, public run thrus are offered. for a small fee, you can run your dog in there on a standard style course.

we have only once competed outside on grass- at the Kissimmee, FL Sheltie Nationals in 2012.

I just have to say that you all are so inspirational as far as getting my little Baker in the agility ring!

ooooh horse rings! We haven't had agility in those conditions for a few years. Or, well, they might still be around in PA but I stopped going to those shows since B&D and PISA are so much closer. Love that B&D is only 30 minutes from my parent's house:biggrin2:

I've done grass when I first started agility (10+ years ago..). WCOTC used to have outdoor shows, then it moved to Pitt at Greensburg, then PISA and now B&D so I've been on grass, mats, and turf. I do have to say I like B&D's turf better than PISA but I like PISA's crating area better, just because it's bigger.

My show in May was outdoors, but that was in Virginia. Basically if you want two rings in my area, it's outdoors. One ring only indoors, just because no one has the space.
