Pet Insurance

I searched the forum and did read a couple of threads on this topic, but wondered if anyone had any recent experiences. There are just so many companies out there.

I'm taking Jagger to his new vet on Saturday and will ask them, but you guys are the real experts! :wink2:

I have Petsecure right now. They have been great. I have had no problems getting reimbursement. It really helped with Liam had his surgery in May.

I use Petplan and have for a couple of years. I actually bought the policy last year when I expected my 14 year old GSD-mix to pass soon because it included a mortality clause. I was taking her to a couple of specialists, but if he couldn't fix her, she would probably be euthanized within a few months. Instead, the specialist found out it wasn't hip dysplasia keeping her from walking, it was a spinal problem. The new diagnosis meant that the insurance covered a 6000 dollar surgery that saved her life, despite the fact that we'd had the policy maybe 2 months at the time. She's still with us today as a result. I now have policies on all my dogs because of that experience. I highly recommend pet insurance, and Petplan.

I have Trupanion. I have a really high deductible plan (I just have it for anything super expensive), but I've been pleased with the service and it's easy to use.

I never even thought about pet insurance until Scout's situation. Now in retrospect, I don't know why I didn't look into it. Thanks for the info that's come forth so far!

I got pet insurance for mine when they turned 2 - mainly because they had started doing dog sports, but also because we did a lot of bush walking (snakes and ticks). So glad I did, Deska later developed joint disease and even tho I got a high excess it covered a large chunk of his current surgery.

Of course there is always a chance your dog will stay healthy for most of their life but its still worth the piece of mind.

Most vets will recommend VPI. I wouldn't touch them, and my vet now agrees after I had them for several years and had hardly anything covered. They also declined to cover a $900 surgery that my vet even argued with them about. What they did cover was miniscule and took forever to process.

I switched several years ago to Pets Best which is owned and run by Aetna. I've been very happy with them...they are fast, even when records are required, and direct deposit reimbursements to your account within a month of filing the claim. Like most, they have different levels of coverage. I have the basic plan for three of mine, and have been pleased to see that even my 7 year-old has not had her premium rise that much over the years. Yet!

I have Pet's Best and I love them! I've filed 3 claims so far and they've covered them all. Their customer service is wonderful--I actually enjoy calling them when I have questions because they are so nice and helpful. They make it really easy to file claims and you get your reimbursement very fast. I highly recommend them!

I've considered pet insurance several times, but, so far, I have never been convinced that, in the big picture of things averaged out over many pets, I am not better off saving the money I would put towards insurance premiums to pay for future veterinary bills.

I am curious, those of you that have it, for large bills (surgeries for example) what has been covered and what percentage of your total costs were paid? What kinds of things were rejected? Any one had experiences with insurance and a pet with cancer?
