Pet insurance.

Compare what they cover with what other plan covers. Make sure there is not a lifetime limit on anything - some plans will only pay so much over the life of a pet on a particular disease or problem. Others have a yearly limit, that resets every year. I know mine now covers hip dysplasia. Some will not cover pre-existing conditions. That was my concern with Liam - he has high cholesterol, has GI issues. Some cover dental cleaning.

I used Embrace with Cody and planning to enroll Zulu. They have a vanishing deductible that goes down $50.00 for every year that you do not make a claim. We opted for a $500.00 deductible, and 90% coverage. When Cody got sick, they covered everything except hardware (needles, tubing etc.) Our vet submitted the claims, and I always received payment before the credit card bill arrived. Received e-mail updates during the claim process. Never had any issues. When Cody crossed the bridge, I received a signed card from everyone that worked with us, and they refunded 100% of my policy! The policy was 4 months old, and I submitted over $2K in claims, so I was not expecting any refund. Highly recommended!

I've talked to a few people since last night who have their animal insured through Embrace and are very happy. Unfortunately, they won't offer illness coverage for Fasb due to his age (only offer illness coverage to purebreds under the age of seven, according to the website).

RikyR: This is the first time I have heard of a vanishing deductible in pet insurance, so it brings to mind a few questions:

1. If you place a claim after a $50 dollar reduction was given, does the deductible stay the same or go back up by $50 until you go another year without a claim?

2. Is the 90% coverage of vet bills, 90% of the actual bill, 90% of "standard and/or customary charges, or 90% of a specific amount set for the type of treatment? I have see all three in the pet insurance policies I have researched.

I learned my lesson with both my dogs.....crazy vet bills with Bacca's illnesses and Indy eating a needle.

Thanks for the reminder! Anyway have feedback on pet insurance in CANADA?

Don't have a good answer to this question, but I am looking closely at Trupanion and Embrace, and by cruising their websites, both of them seem to be available in Canada. A Google search of "Pet Insurance Available in Canada" kicked back a bunch of pages even though I didn't open any of them.

My recent research has turned up what looks like a disturbing trend with at least some of the larger insurers. I am finding that it is not only important to verify the claims each insurer makes about their own insurance policies, it is also important to verify the claims that one insurer attaches to another insurer's policies. I have a running email trail going with both Trupanion and Embrace over things that each has made on their own website about policies of their competitors. My theory is, if a company will misrepresent their competitor's offerings, it isn't a stretch that they will misrepresent their own offerings.

BTW, I assume Pet Secure and Embrace have a common owner, or some sort of business relationship. Pet Secure's website directs American customers to Embrace's website.
