Peta is at it again

theyre just a bunch of misfits and misanthropes that feel the need to have revenge on society (yes Im slightly quoting wikipedia) I just spend my whole morning reading up about hte ALF and PETA , and I noticed PETA doesnt have a contact us button on their website because I was going to inquire as to how inhumane is it really when your pets live better than most people. All their FAQs was a bunch of bullsh*t.

ALF doesnt seem soooo bad because theyre more action-oriented but dont seem to feel that animals shouldnt be kept as pets, just completely anti-cruelty and will do anythign to prevent it. Which for me, being the slight thrill seeker that I am and being very pro-action rather than passifist. I mean, obviously violence isnt the answer but all the animals they saved woudl have never been saved, and I dont care about the universities being shut down because if they do that to animals they shouldnt be able to teach students... I also believe you shouldnt have to pay for knowledge but thats a whole other story...

None the less, please correct me if I have been misguided!!! I dont want the wrong opinion on the ALF becuase although what they do seems to have worked some in the past, they are on the extreme side. (for the record, I am anti-bombings, I dont feel the bombs they planted at the researchers homes is right):dead:

For the record, I'm honestly not sure where this "PETA thinks dogs are better off dead than in homes" idea came from... Dogs are domesticated animals, and even if one believes (as some do) that domestication was a raw deal for animals, no one in their right mind would believe that the dogs/cats/pigs/cows who are already here would be better off dead than as beloved, protected, well-cared-for companions. Many of the most vocal animal advocates have "companion animals" (the word "pets" is discouraged) - they're almost always rescues.

If you're looking for the PETA contact, here's the online form: http://www.peta.org/about/c-email_peta.asp

Bear in mind that PETA, like the ALF, is up against a culture that - daily - turns a blind eye to horrendous abuses of animals. Animal advocates are, I would wager, far more concerned with the animals who are being killed for meat, dairy, eggs, skins, and medically unnecessary research than with dogs who are being trotted around the ring and fed cookies.

as to your opinions on the ALF... one of the biggest problems that I see with the current "anti-animal rights" backlash in the dog community is the thought-policing that comes with it. The idea seems to be that, if you want to be a "good" dog breeder, you need to support responsible breeding - and also support hunting, fur-farming, animal agriculture, uninhibited animal research, rodeos, and any other activity that the animal rights bogeymen oppose. This entirely ignores the human capacity for free thought and individual ethical choice. To that end - I'm not going to tell you how to think on it, but I will encourage you to research as much as you can and have a critical eye towards every bit of information you find, pro or con.

The differences of opinion that we have are part of what makes any community - whether a small one, like Sheltie Forums, or a large one, like the greater band of "dog people" in North America - all the stronger. Education and critical thought are marvelous tools.

I think ALF does things like spiking trees (VERY dangerous to a logger), sabotaging roads, burning down a ski resort and burning a Hummer dealer. No they are not nice people. If you want to be pro dog (beyond yours) I think the examples I have read here of volunteering at shelters and rescue activities are to applauded. ALF, PETA and their ilk are to be avoided and derided

I think you're thinking ELF? (ugh, too many acronyms to keep straight.) I hadn't heard of them.

ALF is UK-based and animal-rights oriented, but also loosely-organized and fond of protest-through-property-destruction.

And you think stealing or releasing these research animals is right??? Research animals are well taken care of, as an animal stressed due to poor nutrition, dirty enclosures, etc. does not yield accurate results. Years ago I took Vet Tech classes at a university that does animal research, those animals were well treated.

If you feel that strongly about it I urge you to stop seeing your doctor, dentist, or vet. Especially your vet. Where do you think we got the veterinary excellence that we have today and where do you think they did the research so that we can give our animals vaccinations??? Do you own a cat that has had a Feline Leukemia vaccine? Over 10,000 cats were sacrificed so that we can prevent our cats from dying of this disease.

Where do you think we got the medicines that we use to treat human diseases and conditions??? We got it from animal research. Or would you rather have us do research on you or your kids to spare the animals lives???

Stepping down off my pedestal now...
