phasing out target

Interesting. My girl understood the behavior quickly, so I phased out the targets. But then she started to slow down, so I added double targets back in (one at the bottom for the nose touch, and one farther out as a reward for the quick release) and that really increased her speed. Now we almost never use them, but I do see myself bringing them back out in the future to increase speed if necessary.

Hmm, never thought about a double target. Quite interesting!

Getting the best contacts using 2o2o is all about knowing exactly what you want to dog to be doing at each stage of his/her learning so that when you move forward and the dog for some reason isn't concrete in his/her understanding and loses the desired positioning/action you can move back in incremental steps until you reach the point where they click and say "ooooh I remember this it's where I'm meant to do this" so I'd expect progression to go:

2o2o - nose to target on floor
2o2o - nose to floor
2o2o - head dip stationary (a definite movement to putting nose on the floor but not fully going all the way before release)
2o2o - head dip moving (as dog is running down the off plank the head is down and dips as it reaches the end, the release command comes at the point the dog reaches 2o2o but hasn't stopped)

I forgot to put the most important bit, I phase out the target by making it smaller and smaller so in the beginning it is ice cream tub size and at the end just before it goes completely it is milk bottle top size or smaller.

Ok, I looked into some info and still bit at loss. Hand touches and hand touches with target in hand are stationary position training. You do not do RUNNING to the target as it will be luring which does not transfer value. So target as itself object is eliminated. So I do shaping with target, then behavior becomes operant and dog offers it at 2o2o position and then I chain running to the 2o2o position.

Step two clearly says nose to floor not nose to target the target has been removed already as in step one the correct position has been shaped then proofed by the nose to floor stage. In between 2 and 3 you'd have back chaining or another method towards the 2o2o position. I was trying to keep it short and sweet. Sorry if it was confusing I should've spent a bit more time explaining having moved to running contacts it's all a bit fuzzy anyhow.

Double targets! Hmm.. I can see how that would work. Interesting! Shall try that.
