Piper 1 year post surgery

Today is Piper’s 1 year anniversary of his surgery to remove most of his lower jaw. I have treasured every extra day I’ve been able to share with him, my love for this boy…it’s un describable and has only grown stronger.
We have been so fortunate that the subtype of cancer allowed for this surgery to be successful, there are too many of our Shelties that haven’t been so lucky and this breaks my heart with every dog diagnosed!
His surgery was a shock and something that took me months to just process after the fact but Piper absolutely thrived throughout this past year!
Piper has all the attitude he always had, the changes never silenced his ‘voice’…when he wants something he is still the loudest of the three and he still tries to nip me in the ankles although it doesn’t quite have the effect it used to 🤣.
Piper had been able to eat on his own but after developing a sore near his nose on his snout (from smushing his nose into the bowl when eating) and the fact it took over a month to heal (because he always had to touch something after I applied the cream) I now hand feed every meal. He of course LOVES the attention, spinning around after almost every spoonful!😂…even when Piper is barky (and mornings are a zoo!) he brings a smile to my face! And of course he can still bite…it’s a bit of a challenge giving him a treat…I ask myself every time…can I do this without catching those back molars😂, it’s 50/50. I say OUCH a lot lol!
I did make Piper some special treats to enjoy later, but then every day is special with Piper around!❤️

Video is from yesterday…Piper trying to eat the weeds. Something he would always do and has never stopped trying!
I love this boy!
How could you not love this face?

I thought she turned over a new leaf after being spayed. Sorry Piper
I thought so too…but once all the healing was done it was back to the old Blueberry. I tell people she still has her hormones so hence she is still a B. And it’s not a lie. Really though I think part of what Blueberry does is playing rough…except when there’s food involved, then she’s just being mean. And for this I do try to protect Piper, mainly because it does upset him when she goes after him seeing he can’t defend himself. I haven’t heard Piper yelp often unless he’s hurt himself except when Blueberry does a sudden attack. It never hurts him physically but you wouldn’t know that to hear him yelp.

I’m so happy for you and Piper that he’s recovered so well! He’s a lucky boy to have you as his personal chef and server! 😆 It’s hard to believe it’s a year….we count our blessings here that Flurry’s jaw healed well too and she’s still with us. Hoping they’re both around to pester us for long time to come.
