Piper's mom

Today is Piper’s 1 year anniversary of his surgery to remove most of his lower jaw. I have treasured every extra day I’ve been able to share with him, my love for this boy…it’s un describable and has only grown stronger.
We have been so fortunate that the subtype of cancer allowed for this surgery to be successful, there are too many of our Shelties that haven’t been so lucky and this breaks my heart with every dog diagnosed!
His surgery was a shock and something that took me months to just process after the fact but Piper absolutely thrived throughout this past year!
Piper has all the attitude he always had, the changes never silenced his ‘voice’…when he wants something he is still the loudest of the three and he still tries to nip me in the ankles although it doesn’t quite have the effect it used to
.
Piper had been able to eat on his own but after developing a sore near his nose on his snout (from smushing his nose into the bowl when eating) and the fact it took over a month to heal (because he always had to touch something after I applied the cream) I now hand feed every meal. He of course LOVES the attention, spinning around after almost every spoonful!
…even when Piper is barky (and mornings are a zoo!) he brings a smile to my face! And of course he can still bite…it’s a bit of a challenge giving him a treat…I ask myself every time…can I do this without catching those back molars
, it’s 50/50. I say OUCH a lot lol!
I did make Piper some special treats to enjoy later, but then every day is special with Piper around!
Video is from yesterday…Piper trying to eat the weeds. Something he would always do and has never stopped trying!
I love this boy!
How could you not love this face?
