One week after the dog show Piper started coughing....id been so busy working with him we hadn't even gone for a walk in the week prior so I know he picked it up there. Of course our vet was closed today so I called another and they said to let it run its course (on their advice I'm giving him Robitussin for dry cough 2.5 ml/10 lbs twice/day). He's not too bad but I feel so bad for him when he coughs, I'm also using a vaporizer for him so that'll help. I was so careful at the show, only having him out of his crate for a minimum amount of time, taking him to pee in areas away from the venue but he still got it. Now no walks for a while...I'm going to call our regular vet tomorrow but there is no discharge from his nose but he's just started sneezing today so I'm going to keep a very close eye on him.
 
Poor Piper, even if you did everything to prevent him from being infected, I think it's hard to avoid as it's
a respiratory tract infection, the incubation period about a week.

Thank you Hanne...it does seem like we may get off relatively easy as it seems like it's a mild form. Not a lot of coughing and the cough medicine does seem to be helping with the cough he does have. We're into day 3 of it and his coughing hasn't gotten much worse than it was on day one (he probably coughed maybe 10 times yesterday) and still no discharge. You wouldn't know he was sick except for the cough. He can still go from 0-60 crazy at the drop of a hat lol.
 
Sounds like Piper isn't having too bad of a course of kennel cough. It is annoying, but hey, we all get colds too. I remember panicking years ago when I brought home a foster Border Collie (a fabulous female) who started coughing after 2 days here - she ended up going to someone else to foster as I didn't want to end up with 3 sick dogs. They did not end up getting it though, phew.

As long as his energy level is good I wouldn't worry too much. Hugs to Piper.
 
Glad Piper's case is mild, and I sure hope she's completely well soon! I never had to vaccinate for kennel cough, but we're going to Westminster in February. For that, I will vaccinate. Layla has had the canine flu vaccine.
 
Poor Piper! I am so sorry to hear that he is sick! Hope he feels better soon! So tough to hear them cough!

Piper is doing much better, just a mild case but this is my first experience with kennel cough so I was worried initially but he's doing really good. He's just really bored, last night we did a few obedience exercises because he was bored and got back into them today (just no heeling outside the yard)
 
Poor Piper! So glad she seems to have a mild case. I heard earlier this month some form of kennel cough was going around dog shows in NY/NJ/PA. It was milder case and symptoms were quickly reduced with Clavamox.
 
Thanks for all the well wishes, he really is doing much better although we're holding off with our obedience trainer for the next 2 weeks because she has 6 German shepherds and doesn't want to infect them (I totally understand). But still working at home on his Advanced and excellent Rally signs.
