Piper news?

I still do NOT understand/can't process how an owner, who proves with proper paperwork that her property is HER property, can NOT get justice and have the PROPERTY returned in a timely manner. And what makes me LIVID, is this is a "rescue" why are they holding a dog CAPTIVE/PRISONER???? I just do NOT get that, it doesn't jive with the purpose or mission of a rescue. And if a "rescue" can overrule the validity of a microchipped animal, on a whim or NO grounds ...that really affects the whole microchipping procedure. WHY would they NOT wait for the Vet who had the records, did the microchipping, to get back and CHECK the records, holiday or not, that makes NO sense. Again, when is YOUR PROPERTY considered NOT your property-when did it become arbitrary or selective??? How is that even LEGAL considering there is proof??? If records prove it, and the breeder said go ahead with DNA testing, that should be the END of it. NO court needs to be involved...where is the "case"??? Custody is based on OWNERSHIP??? Especially since the dog wasn't at all abused or neglected, it just escaped.

Unfortunately, the legal system can be slow. The judge originally did side with Veronica and ordered Piper be returned based on the initial evidence, but since Penny/COSR posted the bond, she got to keep her until everything is worked out in court.

I remember when I was a kid, my sister and I would get in these fights where she would leave something on the floor in our shared bedroom, and I would be like, "I'm not going to give it back to you because you're a little brat and your left it on my side of the room!" and then she would go crying for our mom, and I would REALLY not want to give that item back just out of spite. This is kinda how I picture Penny. She's mad that Veronica took it to social media after she wouldn't initially give Piper back, and now she's digging her heels in deeper just out of spite and anger. It's childish. And she's hurting more than just Veronica and Piper. She's hurting her rescue, because she's losing supporters all across the nation. She's spending so much time and energy on this, that she can't possibly be devoting as much attention to the Shelties that are truly in need. It's very sad.

I am crossing my fingers and sending good thoughts to Veronica today. Hoping for good news!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Veronica finally get's her baby back and that the judge requires Penny to reimburse her for all of her legal fees. That would be justice!!!

The worst part of this is . . . If Penny had used X# of dollars on her own rescue to build a great facility and care for more dogs and Veronica had donated Y# of dollars and ALL of the Piper supporter donators had donated Z# of dollars to other rescues for their programs . . . how many dogs could have been saved and placed in amazing homes? There would literally not be a single sheltie or sheltie cross in the US in a shelter with that staggering amount of money available to rescues. Instead, this horrible situation has allowed animals to not get the help they deserve AND the more people who read this story and think badly of no kill as "dog thieves and flippers", well, this is costing dogs their lives AND as a by-product of people not wanting to risk adopting this is supporting puppy millers and dog thieves who are happily supplying the demand for dogs.

The damage Penny has done to reputable shelters is what is tragic.

Ok, it is tragic, but one bad apple shouldn't spoil the whole mission of rescues. Something is off in Penny to not return the dog. That was her "biz" what she was set up for -to rescue and if possible return. She somehow got sidetracked-lost sight of her true mission and purpose doing rescue work, which is highly unfortunate, and bad publicity is difficult to recover from. I get that. But maybe her time in rescue should have come to an end sooner. But I think most people who are gonna rescue can decipher the good places from the not so good places. It is kinda like trying to get a breeder. You research, you inquire, and then you go look. Some of the places that I visited had great recommendations, but I wasn't comfortable getting a puppy there. The money spent on this whole issue is MIND BOGGLING, and wasteful imho, I concur it could have been used in much BETTER ways. But we live in sensational type times and things just get out of hand for the wrong reasons. I have never thought a courtroom = justice. It is mainly who can spend more on an attorney. But it is all we have...where they should have gone was MEDIATION, and kept it out of the public realm-that would have made MORE sense.

There was unofficial mediation. As in, there wasn't any lawyers or courts involved in it. But a representative from the National Sheltie Rescue tried to negotiate the return of Piper, but Penny and her lawyer were not negotiating under good faith and the representative withdrew.

I read that...something quite amiss there...I have friends in mediation and I think if the parties are receptive that is such a better choice, but obviously it wasn't successful, part of the tragedy, or mystery of what really is going on with this.

I really have such a hard time understanding why this woman (who runs a rescue) would not return Piper to her owner. I feel like she might be mentally imbalanced. It's a sad, sad situation.
