Poop eating problems

Unfortunately, a big part of your problem is what you're feeding him. ProPlan is full of fillers, byproducts, and other poor quality ingredients. If you feed a better quality food (I'm not familiar with the one you're switching to but I'm assuming it's better) you generally will feed less which equals less poop. It does sound as if your dog is going a lot more than normal.

I second the digestive enzymes and I would also add some probiotics. They are two different things that you can use together to help his digestive system function more efficiently. But the most important thing is to get him eating a better food.

My vet suckered me into feeding my dogs ProPlan, but I have since done my own research and found its an expensive mediocre food. Lets hope Applaws sorts him out and makes him more regular again as I cannot potty train him when he's all over the place and unpredictable.

I'm guessing that normally after a dog eats dinner and has a poop afterwards it shouldn't need to go again till the next morning after breakfast? Hugo seems to be able to produce several poops during the night even when he's gone for a poop after his dinner and before bedtime.

Again, it's probably all the crappy fillers, but I want to get an accurate picture of what should be a more typical pooping behaviour.

It would seem to me to be a bit disconcerting if my dog's vet (who is a partner in your efforts to keep your baby as healthy as possible, "suckered you into feeding" a food that is of poor quality. Is there a particular reason that he/she would recommend this brand? I know that in the few situations where I have knowledge about how veterinarian practices are set up, some of the facilities have a "store" that sells specific items for their clients. Perhaps this vet is a seller of this brand?

Some puppies may go more often, but usually it's after breakfast, lunch and dinner (if you feed lunch). They may throw in an extra one to keep you on your toes, but once you're on a regular feeding schedule eliminations are pretty predictable.

The ingredients in your new food do look much better. I hope that improves things for you!

Yes they do sell it. I don't think the vets are highly educated in dog nutrition but they are otherwise very good with my pets.

Thanks Ann, fingers crossed we are on the way to sorting his bowel movements out once and for all! He had a little Applaws mixed in with his ProPlan this morning and gobbled it up as usual.... He probably didn't even notice any difference!
