Clearly, there is much more going on than diet.

I personally don't think that raw is going to be your magic answer, at this time either.

When dogs react like this it can point to a serious medical issue or severe allergies.

Allergies arise from either the wrong protein (e.g. chicken) or to grains/glutens

So you might consider a grain-free diet or a limited ingredient diet. I can recommend several of those.

I even have some clients whose dogs appear to be so allergic that they have switched to a Vegetarian diet.....though I'm not sold on this.

I would not discount the medical side either. If necessary, do get another opinion from another vet. And if they try also to switch to you to a medical diet, demand to know what they are seeking to solve by it.

My dog went through a similar experience when she was a puppy. Ultimately, the only food that helped her was sensitive stomach dog food. I also realized that she was the most sensitive to kibble with chicken in it.

Evo is rich kibble that can sometimes be difficult for a dog with a sensitive stomach to digest.

Wellness, Blue Buffalo and California Natural are some brands that sell limited ingredient dog foods. If you do decide to switch foods, take it very slow. Transition over the course of 2 weeks.

I had similar issues with Sadie when she was approx. 9 months old. She started having intermittent but severe vomiting and diarrhea.

I put her through all kinds of testing and tried switching her to limited ingredient kibbles but nothing helped long term. Out of options, I eventually switched her to a hypoallergenic vet food and cut everything else out of her diet. This finally settled down her digestive system and a year later I was able to feed her normal food again.

I know that there are many people who are skeptical about vet food and I'm not crazy about its igredients either, but it was the only thing that helped in Sadie's case. Perhaps it something you might need to consider, since your pup's digestive system is so irritated by whatever is going on.

Thanks everyone for responding. Thankfully there has been no blood yet this go around. We haven't gotten the fecal done yet because by the time the vet told us we had better come in, the last time, poor guy I'm pretty certain was completely empty. He has been on trifexis for several months now, so I hope that he has no intestinal parasites- that kills those as well right?

I had thought maybe the switch to the trifexis could have done it, but really I have seen no correlation with the timing of giving the pill and his turning.

I'm doubtful that this has anything to do with the trifexis. I tend to think that if it was this drug causing the diarrhea that he wouldn't have improved when you switched him to chicken and rice.

Intestinal parasites are definitely something that should be looked into, several of them can cause severe digestive upset and they also don't always show up in fecal samples.

A second opinion at this point sounds like it couldn't hurt. Let us know how it goes and how your pup is doing!
