Possible Sprain?

Poor guy!

My little Tony was playing with my parent's dog lastnight in our backyard (of our brand new house!). He took a tumble when their cocker spaniel/poodle mix broadsided him. We didn't think anything of it since it's happened a million times before.

Well, this morning he's still his chipper self, but has a very slight limp. He's still chipper as all get out, so we're hoping it's just a sprain? How long would you wait it out before taking your dog to the vet? We love the boy dearly and are willing to do what we need in order to keep him healthy (like shelling out the $800 we spent to get his teeth bonded last fall after learning his enamel hadn't formed properly), but we would like to avoid a trip if possible since we are about to have to buy a new roof!

Any supplements or anything you would recommend trying? He also slept on our hardwood floors lastnight instead of in his bed (or our bed!) so we don't know if that could be it!).

Thank you!!

This has happened a couple times to my dogs. More often than not it's just bruised/sore. Does it seem painful to the touch? Is he seriously favoring it or just a little?

It depends on the severity of the limp/pain, but I would usually do 2 days of strict crate rest. No running, no jumping on furniture, no playing, no walks, etc...If after 2 days you are still seeing symptoms, I'd take him to the vet.

Hope it's nothing serious!

Thanks for the reassurance :) We have him in his crate now and will keep him there all day tomorrow. He was really just not favoring that leg, nothing big, but it was just something new. I've had a dog pop an acl before (poor thing was shaking to bits from the pain), but I've never seen a 'minor' muscle/ligament injury in a pet.

He was already actually acting a bit better when we went outside a bit ago, so hopefully he'll enjoy a few lazy days (I know I would!).

Emma partially tore her right ACL. The only way I knew something was wrong was she would snap at one of the others if they got too close. Even the vet commented on how much pain she was in. She was still weightbearing so it wasn't a complete tear.

Hope the crate rest fixes the problem fast.
