Possible UTI

Update on Chloe's incontinence

We had an appointment with my vet on Monday.

He assured me that Proin is safe and that she will most likely not have any side effects from the drug. He explained that the Proin targets the sphincter muscle and gets it working again. His recommendation was that I start her on the Proin and slowly decrease the amount that she gets in hopes that her sphincter starts working correctly again.

Last night, at 4-H, Chloe had a pee puddle underneath her while she was laying down next to my daughter. My daughter's face turned ten times the shade of red. I felt so bad for her.

So, after sitting on my vets recommendation, and reading through both Dr. Mac and Dr. Shelli's information, and I decided this morning to put her on the Proin. She is getting one half a pill twice a day.

I hope I am making the right choice.

On a good note, he said that Chloe's muscle tone in her leg is getting much better. She is not limping anymore, and only once in awhile will I see her lift her leg when she is sitting down.

Thanks for all of your words of advice and encouragment.

I'm so happy to hear she isn't limping anymore!

Sounds like you're doing the right thing by giving her prion. I hope it works well and she will not have to take it in the future.

So it has been a month on the Proin and Chloe has official not had an accident in her crate for about 2 1/2 weeks. I am so happy.

The Proin is definitely working. I spoke to my vet this morning and we are going to continue on this dosage of Proin for now. At some point, we may lower it, to see if she remains the same with a lower dosage. He said that sometimes the Sphincter muscle strengthens and that it doesn't need the Proin anymore. He also said that most of the time, the dog does need to stay on medicine for their life.

I'm so glad Proin is working for Chloe! She must feel so much better.

She does seem to be feeling better lately, thanks. She is not limping and not haaving accidents :biggrin2: I hope that this trend continues for her. We are going to start trialing in Rally with her in May (knock on wood) as long as she continues to feel good.

That's great, what a relief for you! :smile2:

Just catching up on this thread, and I'm glad to hear that Chloe is doing well and the Proin seems to be working. Dr Mac's information was also interesting.

Some of the comments on this thread make me wonder if female Shelties often have urinary issues. It seems like pretty much all of us who have girls have had some kind of UTI, especially if the Sheltie was spayed early.

Note: The reason my mind goes straight to spaying is because our breeder very strongly advised us to wait an "unusually" long time on spaying Buffy. She said girl Shelties often have urinary issues if they are spayed too early.

I am considering bringing in a urine sample for Bailey as well. She has been holding it in for long periods of time and then peeing back to back within an hour. She also peed in the middle of our indoor agility class. Since she had some many UTI's as a puppy, I get worried whenever her potty habits change.

Recently, Buffy has been doing this at dinnertime or after dinner - whining twice in quick succession to go out and then going both times. I hadn't thought about linking it to other issues, but I did think it was weird. (Buffy had a UTI when she was little and that was when we knew she was potty trained.... because she whined so much, so loudly, and so urgently when she went inside or in her crate.)

Danielle, my guess is that Chloe's immune system is still trying to recover from her Lyme disease, and her urinary system has always been a bit weak, it seems. I wish you and her the best of luck in her recovery. Having had a sheltie with a UTI - I know it's no fun at all!
