Potty time bell training

Oh I don't like bells. Esp with a smart dog like a sheltie! I taught Romeo to ring the bell hanging on the door knob, not to go out and pee but to have access to his water bowl (it's in the loo that is attached to my room upstairs - this is only at night). He learnt that ringing the bell means he gets mummy's attention and would just ring the bell whenever he's bored and tired of lying around waiting for me to be done with whatever I am doing. :rolleyes2: I'd get up, open the door and he'd be looking at me all "ok now that I have your attention let's do something!!". So *I* have learnt how to read his body language so I know when he actually wants to go inside for some water! I ignore some of the bell ringings now.

Yes soon you realize your sheltie is not the only one trained to respond to the bells. It helps to ignore Bell ringing that isn't for an appropriate reason. They learn fast what bell ringing is really rewarded
 
Lol I trained Piper to ring a bell and he did great. Finnie would ring it to go outside to play. If I ignored him (because he’d just been outside) he’d ring it right off the wall :ROFLMAO:. Blueberry...nope, no bell and she did great. Just the good old treat and YES! Lol...but then girls are wayyyy smarter!
