Potty Training - success during the day, failure at night

Good news. We are going to go down the crate route, my boyfriend's mother has finally had enough of cleaning pee and poop!

Next steps are trying to find somewhere to put two cages, trying to find two good sizes cages and then attempting some crate games, woo... guess who is going to be doing all the work? Lol.
lol it was your idea :wink2: We put my pup's crate right next to my side of the bed... isn't that convent that he can wake me up . You can do living rooms though or a spare bedroom etc. Ironically, we ended up buying my pup's new crate at Walmart! It was a good price and the size we needed and since he's still growing we wanted one that would accommodate the growth. The other crate we have we bought at PetSmart which it was about 60-70 dollars and sadly, is too small for both my dogs, but not too small that I feel bad when I have to shove my female in it for a day for pest control. Her ears just stick out :o. I found either way whether you go to Walmart or a pet store, they're both very similar crates. We also put towels down in the crate when the puppy was still having accidents this way we could just switch them out and wash them. This might be an idea for the first week or so. My pup later developed a rash near his private areas we believe to be because of the metal pan in the crate because he scratches the towels away. We then purchased him a crate bed which was 40$. Let us know how the training goes! It takes lots of time, but definitely worth it!!!!

Glad to hear it! The crate should help with the overnight accidents.

Ideally the crate should be just big enough for the dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down in. If you go bigger, I'd suggest blocking off the "excess" crate space until the house training is completed successfully then slowly remove the barrier. Wire crates will often come with a section to create this wall. Soft-side and travel crates you will have to get creative and stuff blankets and the like in the back.

If you put a blanket, pillow or towels in the bottom and still have issues with accidents, remove them. It won't hurt the dog to lay on the bottom of the crate without such items.

Our blue merle absolutely hated laying on anything soft. If we put a towel or pad in his crate, it would be bunched up and stuffed in the back within minutes. Out of the crate he insisted on laying on tile/wood inside or cement outside. The smallest of our pups will pull back the crate liner and either flip it over to sleep on the smooth nylon backing or sleep under it on the hard plastic bottom and use the liner as a blanket.

huh, that's so weird! I have to opposite. my pup LOVES his dog bed. He did have a towel in his crate and would crunch it up and lay on the metal, but now that he has a crate bed in it he LOVES it. my female could care less what she lays on, though loves our bed

Our Schipperke loves his bed. It's next to our bed on the wife's side (technically, he's her dog ;) ). The bigger of the pups hasn't really shown a preference either way, but there was no way we could ever get Winston to sleep on a bed.
