Prednisone

How does it help with paralysis? That's still unclear to me.

Sadie has made an incredible, rapid improvement since being on prednisone and I'm really interested why.

It suppresses the inflammation response around the spinal cord and nerves leaving the spinal cord which is really a function of the immune system. Trauma and bleeding set off a whole chemical cascade that tells the immune system to send in cells to clean up the damage and stablize the injury(though swelling which could be good as it prevents further injury) that will put pressure on the nerves and cause the paralysis. But in the case of the spinal cord,if pressure is there long enough you will see perment damage to the nerves so we want to get rid of it. The prednisone suppresses that chemical cascade and removes/keep the inflammation off the nerves. That is why you see the most response to prednisone within the first couple weeks. NSAIDs work the same way but they focus on only a small part of the inflammation cascade just a few pathways so they are not as potent. Prednisone does the whole thing.

Thanks! I figured it had to do with inflammation but that's about as far as I got, not being a big expert like you. :smile2:

Thanks again!
