Projected Cost of New Puppy

So I’m the kind of person that likes to plan. After reviewing my finances, I thought it would be helpful for me to draw out a kind of budget for a new sheltie puppy. I don’t have a puppy yet, so this is more of the research phase for me. I thought the input of sheltie owners/breeders would be a great place to get an idea of some of the costs associated with a new puppy. I imagine this information could apply to anyone getting a new puppy, I’m just curious from your own experiences. I’m looking for averages here. I know a lot of these things vary depending on how high-end I go, but I’m just trying to get an idea of cost. (Please add things to the list I forgot, or specifics, or tips, or advice, etc.). Below is what I got so far, I have some prices filled in and some left blank…

Puppy: About $800 (for a pet quality pooch)

-Vet visits: (Like vaccines, check up?)
-Spay: (I’d probably get a female)
-Flea/Heartworm:
-Food: (I know this can vary. I want to feed high quality, but probably not the most expensive… so just looking for an average cost type of thing)
-Toys: $30
-Regular Metal Crate:
-Grooming tools: (I know this will be more for when the pup grows up)
-Bed: $40
-Misc. Supplies: $30 (Collar, leash, food bowl)
-Puppy kindergarten:
-AKC registration: $35 (I think I want the registration plus the lost&found)
-Ear training equipment: ?? (glue, etc?)

Puppy: About $800-1000

-Vet visits: $52 office visit, I have no idea what vaccines run. I think Rabies was like $17 last time I went.
-Spay: $148 + optional bloodwork
-Flea/Heartworm: $45 test, don't remember what the pills were
-Food: $50/ 35 lb. bag (which will last one dog forever)
-Toys: $30
-Regular Metal Crate: I have some as cheap as $15 from Lowe's
-Grooming tools: Regular pin brush, $7-10
-Bed: FREE! (my couch)
-Misc. Supplies: $50 (Collar, leash, food bowl)
-Puppy kindergarten: $109 in this area
-AKC registration: $35 (I think I want the registration plus the lost&found)
-Ear training equipment: ?? (glue, etc?)

Cost is going to vary depending on where you live and the products you buy.

I just got Pyper in Feb. this year. I paid $950 from a very reputable breeder in northern CA. It was an extra $180 to fly her here. We had some trouble with pericites which cost about $100 extra. First check up was about $100. Then shot clinics for about $30 X 3. She was recently spayed, dewclaws removed and microchipped for $488. Basic obedience classes 8 weeks for $120. Now we do agility foundation for $15 each week. Soooo...that adds up to a little over $2000. not counting food and frontline. She's worth several million so I consider her A FABULOUS VALUE!!!!!!!!!!!

I only know this because I'm researching getting into a pet franchise.....the average american spend on their dogs is $746 per year. Factoid!

So you guys are all in the range! Even,

startup costs are the most with a new pup.
I still havent used all the goodies I bought when Gavin was a pup.
He still has treats from then, as well as toys. we all tend to go overboard with a new pup!

I figure I spend $250/year on food and treats.
$300/year on vet visits and, heartworm meds, and vaccines (relatively healthy dog)
maybe $200/year on extras (he got a new bed this year!).
and $250/year on boarding for vacations and such.

spay costs vary greatly.

I don't remember the initial stuff, I'm afraid. I was just so excited to have my puppy :D
