They are such good boys. Don't you think that dogs that are taken places and for visits are just better, more well rounded and less OCD?

Michele do you lift them in and out of the car? We had the fear for a while entering/exiting the car and truck but it was when I was lifting him in.

In my training schedule, I teach the "alley-oop" command, which means get up onto whatever I point at. I train it on all kinds of different things and then use it to get into the car. McKinley then has the option to decide for himself where his feet are going to land in the car/truck. I start with just "alley-oop" to the floor board and then to the seat and then to the back of truck (NO HE NEVER RIDES THERE!). We saw the fear of entering/exiting disappear once he was in control of where his feet were going.

As far as the car sickness, I am glad he is getting better with that. Make him wear a bib and then Trapp can tease him about it!

I do lift Trapp up in,as he just has'nt got brave enough to hop in on his own.He will however jump out no problem.He just started 2 weeks ago,jumping up on the bed and off.I do lift his front legs up,but he balks away,but then again I have no treats to coax him up.So I may just give that a try,with the alley opp command.He's pretty easy to coax.Once he does it once,he will gladly do it again and again.

Jasper on the other hand,walks nicely to the truck,but once the door is open,he just freezes.So I think it is going to be baby steps outside the truck to get him to approach it,with out looking like a deer on a frozen pond with legs all sprawled out.`
Duh..me just had not thought about giving a high value treat..cause wherever food is,he will follow as well.

My pup Vash has a similar problem entering/exiting my car. He's fine inside the car, and fine outside the car. But the moment it looks like I'm going to place him in the car he runs away. When I try to get him out of his little travel crate and exit the car he moves to the opposite end of the crate and i have to preform a yoga strech to get him.

If you manage to come up with a way to get jasper cool with entering/exiting the car I'd be very intrested in how you did it!

Susan Garrett has wonderful Crate games DVD. Essence is to make a dog LOVE his crate and WANT him to run there as fast as they can. Basis- as anything else it is training/ conditioning. Teach your pup that being inside of car is a good thing to happen. Start with car in the garage and feed your pup meals in there. Play tug with your pup inside of parked car. Make it very rewarding for your pup to go in or out if the car. I bet in 2 weeks if you consistent your pup will run inside of your car on full speed.

Indy and Bacca here...

We'z hate cars. Means either vet, groomer or cottage. First two are bad. Last is good, but we never know sure where Mom's taking us. We think that bags packed at the main escape route from house means cottage. Leash only means nasty business.

Indy barfed up once in the car. Man, was it gross! Then he tried to eat it back. Even grosser! I told him better to let Mom clean it up, but he doesn't listen. Then he had pukey breath the rest of the way. Yuck! I keep trying to teach him etiquette but he just doesn't listen to me. or Mom.

You might try short trips that have a special surprise. This has helped with Angel. She hasn't gotten sick on our last 5 trips. (fingers crossed). We will every once in a while (on cooler nights) load the girls in the car and drive over to Sonic for an icecream. They always get doggie treats from the wait staff there.

Well this evening I took Trapp with me into town.I did use a bit of chicken we had from supper,and used "feet up" and to my surprise he put his paws up on the frame of the truck.I gave him a small bit of chicken,then I tried again.

He actually put both feet back down on the ground,and all of a sudden he gave a big jump,and in he went all the way up on the seat.So it was a success,and now that he's done it once,he won't hesitate.

Tomorrow after work,I will spend some time with Jasper doing the same.Thank you again for the tip~

Yeowww yuck! I think I grossed Trapp out,but thatz ok,cause I like freaking him out.He's such a wuss!
mom just cleaned it up,and did'nt say anything to me.She just smiled,so I figured its all good.She tells me I will get better,when I get bigger.Dam..I thought I was big now.

Dear sons,
I am sorry that I couldn't come visit you in person last month because of my.....tender stomach when in a car. Maybe I will, in time, overcome this disability and be able to travel with my humans.

Crate games are the best....and I highly recommend them. My daughter introduced me to crate games, after her agility instructor told her about them.

I couldn't believe the difference in MMM's attitude when he had his options to where his feet were going while getting in and out of the cars.

And yes, I always try to make sure that our pups have lots of positive thoughts about car rides. A dog that only gets car rides just to the vet are going to get the Pavlov's dog respond of nervousness.

MMM never has a clue where the next trip will end up.

(He has a HUGE ride ahead of him here in Sept. We are moving 1500 miles away. 3 day car ride)

Deska here - I agree with Indy, I reckon food tastes better the second time around. Aren't our mum's always raving on about how good BARF is, heck there is even a whole section on SF on barf!!!

I can sympathise with you guys, mum makes me sit on a towel when we go for long drives in case I barf. On a 3 day drive I reckon I would need the whole linen cupboard of towels though! Poor you MMM.
