Pulling on leash

We have had our little guy, Gizmo, for 3 weeks now. He is almost 7 months old. for about the first week and a half he did great on his leash, no pulling at all and I thought, GREAT! But that changed really pretty suddenly (and i cant figure that out either), and i dont know if its something i am doing wrong.:confused2: He is pulling almost all the time, every time he goes outside. there have been times where he will pull so hard i can hear him gag/choke! Then there is the matter of him trying to chase EVERY car that passes. he lunges and jumps and i KNOW it has got to hurt him. I have to have him on a leash because of apartment pet rules. Please, I need some help. i dont want him to hurt himself! How can i get him to stop pulling on the leash, and lunging/jumping at the cars? When i know a car is starting to come down the road, i try to get his attention and have him sit. which works until the car comes closer, then he kind of freaks out, and i cant get his attention again until the car is gone. is there something else that i can do??? ive never had a dog, so i dont really know what im doing and need as much advice as i can get! please help?!

it is not uncommon.
Search this forum , there is tons of previous posts on this topic.
I use Gentle Leader. Many people use harness

SheltieChe is right about the forum containing many posts on this subject. If you do a search, type in lunging and barking on walks, or you could go to my name under community>members and you will see what I have posted on the topic.
When you have the dog sit as a car goes by, wait until the car is close so there is no anticipation of the car coming, stand with you on the street side, kindof blocking your dog. But do a search, if you cannot find what you are looking for let me know, I will pm you.
good luck

well i think i found something to try on the car part of the problem. I dont remember who posted it, but it is the "watch" or "look at me" command. i think this is what we will start working on. I do understand that it could take a while before it completely works, but if it works then it works. Im not really finding anything about the pulling on the leash though, other then the gentle leader. Karen (or anyone else for that matter), do you have any ideas on that? go ahead and pm me if you want.
