Puppies and a raw diet.

At the risk of sounding really stupid, I have to ask- where do you feed your dogs their raw meals?

Since all raw meats can potentially cause salmonella or ecoli, I've always wondered if dogs are feed their raw meats indoors? You people must do a lot of floor moppping.

Anyway, I'm just trying to figure out how you feed your dogs raw AND keep the house sanitary........

mine eat right in the kitchen, usually on the floor they never seem to keep their food in the bowl :rolleyes2:

but then again I have never been one to worry too much about germs. I wash my hands after handling the raw meat most of the time, but to be honest I don't usually mop the floor afterwards unless it happens to be the day I mop. :lol:

No one in the house has ever gotten sick. I do make my 5 year old daughter wash her hands when she helps feed the dogs.

Just an Sidebar Note on missing Cleveland in our house

One of little things I miss about Cleveland is he was always around to snuffle up dropped pretzal or pieces of green beans or just about anything else that handsome husband of mine dropped on the floor while he was cooking. I looked at my kitchen floor this morning :eek2:

I about died! I never knew how much the furball snuffled up!

Mine eat in the kitchen too. If I give them some meat, without the bone, they eat it right from their dish, but if it is with bone, like a chicken thigh, back or leg, it ends up on the floor. I use a Norwex cloth and clean it up with water and have never had a problem with any infections.

Ah yes, apparently bones taste better when eaten off the floor - my two can attest to that. And they are even better when they have spent the day hidden under mum's bed covers (as I discovered a couple of nights ago).

Oh! Luckly mine don't like to hide them. But Chinook thinks his taste the best when if covered in dirt! If the door is open, he will take his and eat it outside, in the dirt! Yuk!
What I do need to get though, is a bib of somekind for Chinook, as he gets it all over his chest fur! Now, that is hard to clean afterwards.

THAT is a great idea for a picture! A Sheltie with a bib. Not that I personally would ever try such a thing. :uhoh:

I had Replyka on raw food pretty well at 8-10 weeks. I don't remember the exact time...but it was around there. There is a place about an hour away that is a store solely dedicated to raw food diets. They sell pre-mixed meals called "Healthy Paws". They have actual puppy dinners that are grinded up into like a thick paste, which is what I've been feeding Replyka as one of her meals...the other meal she get's what Caliber gets, as she's going to be 5 months soon, and the suggested amount of time to feed the puppy dinners is up to 6 months. They sell meals with fruits and veggies, like chicken, turkey, beef, bison, kangaroo...they have tons of stuff. I just recently bought green tripe *gag* to mix in with Calibers meals every now and again. The stuff is great for them, but smells AWFUL! Definitely not something you want to feed in the morning...bad mistake today!

It seems to be a Canadian-based company, but I didn't check to see if it was sold in the US. So, any other Canadians out there looking for a good option for raw, that site shows you places in your area that sell it. They have great stuff to choose from. As someone who was just starting to learn about the raw food diet, it was a really great option for me. It's also good if you're not sure about what you should be making in a meal, or if you just don't have time to...which in both cases is me. I just always make sure to switch up the meals, and add more things to the meals so that I know they're getting both variety and the right nutrients. And a bonus...the price is right! to feed both my dogs for about three months...about $100. Which is only a fraction of what I was paying before when I was feeding JUST Caliber with the other raw stuff. They both also get a chicken back once a day...usually night time. Caliber only eats once a day, but Rep still eats two, so I give Caliber his back When Rep gets her second meal so that I don't feel so bad :lol:

Sounds like a good idea to do the research while you finish off all that food!! It's a lot to take in and to learn, but once you learn more about it, it's easy as pie. Good luck! It'll be one of the best things you could do for your pup! I know that right now - my dogs will never get kibble again!! BEST thing I did for them! And they looooooooove it!
