Puppy eats grass

At the agility show last weekend, Celtic decided to relieve his boredom by eating the ground undr our tent. Not just llittle blades of grass but huge mouth fulls of dirt and grass. I pulled racketball size divots out of his mouth 3 times before I finally got him contained on the mat.

He was bored nothing else to do. When I got him a chewy from the vendor he stopped.

Grass is really innocuous. On the list of all the worrying things dogs (and esp puppies) can shove in their mouths, grass isn't there. I'd just let a puppy chew on it, eventually they grow out of needing to chew on everything.

I actually have a large pot of grass (with some parsley growing in it) for the animals to munch on seeing as they can't always get to the lawn. The cats particularly like to sup on grass, the dogs only tend to do it with an upset tummy. Only thing I've ever deterred is Deska eating moist dirt because it gives him gastro.

All of mine eat grass, from puppies on up. It's perfectly normal, as long as your grass hasn't been treated with fertilizers etc.

Now, if I could just get rid of the rabbits that have decided to inhabit my dog yard every night, leaving lovely little bunny crunchies. Apparently they're gourmet treats to the dogs. First time out in the morning you'd think they were cows from the munching. I look like an idiot running around trying to scoop bunny pellets ahead of my dogs. I've tried repellents, hanging deterrents and finally bought an ultrasonic sound device as a last resort. Fingers are crossed. :gaah

My boys eat grass too and no ill effects... That is why I never use fertilizers.

I too had the same bunny issue! I have a 6ft stockade fence all around my yard and have placed metal gutter guards around the base of the fence. I also used wolf urine around the edges of the yard and NO BUNNY POOP! Not sure which of the solutions made the difference... but I am glad I no longer need to worry about the droppings!

Fyi, I have a KOI pond and have issues with a Raccoon... hence, the wolf urine solution. Just take a few drops to deter them!:wink2:

Looks like I'm going to have to tell the husband no fertilizer on the back lawn until she outgrows this. I'm not sure how much she really is eating, but she does pull it out. He loves his lawn so I'm sure he won't be happy, but he adores Lacey so it will be ok.

I agree with everyone else here, it's perfectly normal and don't panic. All our dogs nibble grass when they can. Canines are omnivores - wolves, foxes and coyotes all regularly dabble in plant eating. So as long as the behaviour seems obsessive, I'm going to let Sparta keep grazing.
