What brushes do you recommend for a puppy? Rosetta is 13 weeks old and shedding already. I have a slicker brush and a pin brush that I got at Petco. She does not like the slicker brush. It is probably to sharp. The pin brush doesn't seem to do much, and the bristle brush doesn't get the excess hair out. Help! What should I use on a puppy with a short coat? Thanks.

Did you find a brush that is working? What are you doing for grooming? Is grooming something dogs dont mind or like?
My cat Liza hears the word brush and she comes running meowing, it is her most favorite thing we do together and she will nudge you long after for more and more and more, she never wants brushing to end.

Ok, going to try to make this too long a thread....

First question......what slicker and pin brush did you buy? A brush is not a brush is not a brush.....You can buy some pretty good ones off the shelf at a pet store, but its hit or miss, I've found. And I own a pet store, btw!

But more important is the process that you go through to get your pup used to being brushed. Its a gradual process.

Usually you start in the evening when pup is falling asleep in your lap. The first few experiences should be gentle strokes and letting your dog getting used to being brushed. At the same time, you want to start handling your dogs paws. Stroking and gradually pushing their nails outwards. Then you want to start introducing tools.

To start.....just hold pup in your lap and let them sniff the tools. Have treats handy and start to apply them gently. If pup allows the touch, then praise and treat. And that's enough for the first night.

Keep doing and extend the length of time that you "groom".

From there it is just ongoing "conditioning". At some point, your dog may decide that grooming is "not on". Others may offer other opinions, but it comes a time when I tell my dogs that they ARE getting groomed, so suck it up and lie down! As soon as they settle, they get a treat, and throughout the rest of the grooming as well.

My dogs are both 4 years old now. And yes, they will run away when they see me bring out the torture tools but settle immediately once I catch them, but I usually only treat them at the end. And its usually a really big treat.....

I find it interesting that at such a young age this dog is shedding~ But stranger things do happen.

When they are so young, really unless this dog is really full of coat, which probably isn't the case, just getting the dog used to being handled, whether up on a table or on the floor is important. It really lays the foundation to a properly behaved dog down the road.

So baby steps, like some have posted. Getting the dog used to being touched with grooming tools.Getting them used to be handled. Cause down the road, you may need a groomer to handle this dog. Lots of positive reinforcements, treats are a must. Make the sessions short, don't overwhelm the pup.

Get the pup used to noises, blow dryer, dremal etc. I would'nt be using these, but the noise is what they need conditioning to. Eventually in baby steps gently touch the dog with various tools, and always give praise.

When my boys were this young, all I ever had was a pin brush & a slicker. That slicker never touched the boys till they needed it at a much older age. They are 3 & 2-1/2. There was never really a use for any other grooming tool, other than the pin brush when they are so young.

We use these kinds of brushes on the adult dogs http://www.christiesdirect.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=465 and my pup doesn't mind them at all. They aren't pokey (if that makes sense) so don't hurt her but they take away loose hair in the adults. I'm not actually sure what brand ours is, dad has gone to a show in England and taken all the grooming stuff.

I would be slightly worried about her shedding already, at 13 weeks, she should be still growing her hair I would have thought. Can you actually see it coming out around the house or is it just when you brush her?
