Puppy Height and Weight

Liam is about 15.5" and was 14.8 pounds two weeks ago at the vet's. I'll get another weight on him on Thursday when he goes in for the neuter.

Also, Emma is now 13 months old, so she is no longer a puppy.

Well let me see:

Mia ~ 5-1/2 months~ 9lbs & 12"
Trapp ~ 13 months ~ 21lbs & 16"
Jasper ~ 11 months ~ 20lbs & 15-1/2"

An inch is a lot he is probably an inch higher and two inches longer. But he definately looks a lot bigger. Is she still only 16lb because that would make her mighty skinny.

I've updated the spreadsheet with Miko and the giant Fluffstar.

Fluffy hasn't been weighed since she was spayed in...March I think it was. Her next vet visit (unless something goes wrong!) will be at the end of January where she is due for more shots, possibly a heartworm test, and a checkup. I think the last time she went in she was 18 pounds, but I could be wrong.

Smudge is the one I worry about weight wise. :dead: The vet wants him no less than 30 pounds, but the last time we went he had dropped from 26 to 24. I just can't keep weight on him no matter what I do!

Thanks caro for your list

I was wondering if my Fergus was fat because his trainer told me last Saturday after class that he was slow and was heavy and i think i blame the fact of the hot weather here.

Then i found Caro's list of weight and sizes and i realize he is like most of the rest of shelties in the list.

this month just a couple of weeks before his seven month vet check shows this:

Hight 40 cms that's 15.75''
weight 12 kilograms that's 26.4 lb.

my question is in which month a sheltie stops growing and gaining weight? when do u know if ur sheltie is getting fat?. i know this subject its not easy because shelties have many sizes and shapes. :confused2: but im still wondering if Fergus will grow more.

I found they stopped growing in height by 1yr old - although most of their growth happens by 9mths. They tend to put bulk up during 'adolescence' so maybe 9-14mths. As for putting on weight - well they can do that forever. Like those frugal scots, most shelties can get by on a whiff of food.

I would ask your vet about switching him to adult food. Deska was about 8mths when he switched to adult because he was getting a little tubby and the vet recommended it (puppy food is higher in fat). In summer I also cut out my dog's morning meal - they just get a neck or small bone to chew on rather than kibble so I can keep their weight down.

Jessica - have you thought of putting Smudge on a working dog kibble or back on to puppy food? Higher levels of fat and protein. I had a skinny sheltie in the past that I often put onto those foods to bulk him up.

He has always been skinny, but after the whole "I'm going to throw up and refuse to eat so don't even try to make me eat!" routine the vet did examine him pretty good. They did worm tests, a parvo test, and put him on a bunch of medicine that never seemed any good. At least I know it's not worms. :rolleyes2: So the vet is aware that he sometimes refuses to eat.

We've tried adding extra meals. I've tried giving him extra treats, but I have to be careful of how much extra I give him. If I give him too much food he pukes. It's hard to find a balance. :dead:

Smudge has been through so many food changes that I just don't want to put him through another change. What about those calorie food tubes they sell at the pet store? Would that be a bad idea?

He looks so terrible though. I know Fluffy isn't stealing his food because they get fed in their crates!

are we giving him too much food?

im going to ask her this week that i have to take him to see her for his skin problem. i was wondering the same, the problem is he dosen't eat only dog food (i use Royal Canin mini junior type) he eats 3 times a day and each time he's got 61 grams, that's 183 grams per day (yes i weight the food everyday  ) but also he eats like 4 or 5 pieces of cheese after my mom gives him 1 soup spoon of oatmeal wash or if she cooks eggs she gave him the white part. or a piece of apple of course without seeds or papaya or pear. at noon after his royal canin, he eats chicken or meat depends on what my mom cooks of course his portion is special no salt no condiments etc. at evening again after his royal also again some meat or chicken or sauces. oh i forgot i have to give him one tea spoon of olive oil that's a part of medicine for his fur for his demodex.

also for training im using sauses, cabano (dont know if in English is the same) or brewer (think its the right word) as reward

my question now is: are we giving him too much food?:confused2: my vet says he is very healthy and strong and he's got a good skin color etc. she says he is not fat, the breeder says the same but trainer says he is :uhoh:

Everything a puppy gets - whether their food or our food - is part of their diet. With my dogs, if they get something of what I eat, I don't give them as much of their food. I try and balance their food so that all they get is part of their limit for the day.

I have cut Emma back on her kibble as she has gained a bit of weight and I want to get it off her. Liam has gained a bit of weight, but I watch how much he gets too, so that he doesn't become overweight.
