Puppy Height and Weight

It does sound a lot. You could feed him those things in place of a meal. Think about switching him to 2 meals a day (so cut out lunch) and even halve his evening mea, esp if he is getting meat in the evening.

My vet has an interesting sign in the waiting room that shows what various treats for dogs are equivalent to for humans. I think a cube of cheese is equivalent to a Big Mac so your mum needs to step back on the cheese.

Jessica - have you thought of putting Smudge on a working dog kibble or back on to puppy food? Higher levels of fat and protein. I had a skinny sheltie in the past that I often put onto those foods to bulk him up.

Justice is like Smudge. He eats and eats and never gains weight. I put him on performance food since he was a puppy nothing helps but maturity. Even now on raw he is eating 4% of his body weight daily(more than the avg dog) to maintain his weight, though his muscle tone is better. It is just as frustrating as having a dog that tends to be heavy.

my question now is: are we giving him too much food?:confused2: my vet says he is very healthy and strong and he's got a good skin color etc. she says he is not fat, the breeder says the same but trainer says he is :uhoh:

if you can feel his ribs easily then he is not fat.
You should not have to press at all to feel the ribs, brestbone or spine. Best way I can say it it feel your hand. Your knuckles with an open hand is just right. Your knuckles with a closed hand is too thin, turn your hand over and feel your palm right under the fingers. That is too heavy and that is how subtle the diffence is.

Bailey looks heavier than both Justice and Diva when wet.

I finally wicketed my boys
Leo is 9.5" at 12 weeks, today at 3 months he is exactly 6 lbs
Che is 19.5" and 38.6 lbs at 13 months old
it is amazing to watch how gently Che plays with Leo...

Not much of a puppy update anymore, but here are mine:

Lexi, @ 1: 15.75" and 15 lbs
Bentley, @ 3: 15.75" and 19 lbs

Now i understand more

Thanks Caro, Emmasmom and calliesmom

Everything a puppy gets - whether their food or our food - is part of their diet. With my dogs, if they get something of what I eat, I don't give them as much of their food. I try and balance their food so that all they get is part of their limit for the day.

I have cut Emma back on her kibble as she has gained a bit of weight and I want to get it off her. Liam has gained a bit of weight, but I watch how much he gets too, so that he doesn't become overweight.

Now I understand more about what ppl say here (in sheltie nation) when mix dog food and human food. I was sure we were giving him a lot of food because it’s not logical to give him human food and dog food without taking care of the grams per day. My mom felt worry (in a good way of course) when I told her about the cheese and finally understood, so today she didn’t even cut a piece for Fergus  . We started to do what caro said if we are going to give him meat or something we’ll reduce his dog food and of course we cut his lunch.

It’s very interesting Caro what ur vet has in his waiting room. May I ask u caro what else in that sign says?. I think all that we could learn about Dogs and Shelties is very useful.

I think Fergus is fat! Actually today, before I read what calliesmom said I had pressed my fingers against his ribs because i couldn’t felt them with the palm of my hand. Plus his tummy looks like a little barrel . I’m still at office now, when I get home I will try the knuckles thing.

I am so glad for the idea of the pencil and the wall, otherwise I would not have been able to measure.

Paladin-10 months old 16.25 inches and 21 lbs,I do not think he will grow much more at this point,

Maverick is 7 months old and is 16 inches and 25 1/2 lbs, he looks like he may have issues with getting chubby so I am watching him closely, hopeful that he will get taller. Will he still get taller?

Leo at 21 weeks/ 5 month old is 12.5" and 10.8 lbs
He looks like his body is finally too big for his head. He is slighly on chubby side, i.e. his ribs have some meat on them, since he is fuzzball it is hard to see tummy tuck. I am thinking of eliminating his midday meal and leave 2 meals a day from now on.

Is there some kind of mature height calculator, I think I read somewhere it is like add 5" at 3 months old or add 2" at 5 months height? This is for boys, less for girls and boys with fine bone...
