Puppy mill links?

Unfortunately, it is true that there appears to be no legal terminology regarding what constitutes a puppy mill.

The only legislation in place deals with issues regarding substandard care to the animals.

Therefore theoretically, you could find a website that sold multi-breeds of purebreds and "fashion-mixes" and if they were maintained in humane conditions, they would not be classified as puppy mills.

There are thousands of breeders who are "not" puppy mills but breed all the fashionable mixes of yorkie-poos and cockadoodles, etc. I like to think that the majority are humane breeders, but it does not make me like them anymore. This is a fine line and one I find difficult to cross. I'm a purist, I guess, and I don't mind experimenting with crossing breeds to develop a better breed of dog, but I fundamentally object to the fashion breeding currently going on.

p.s. As a business owner, however, this fashion breeding is my livelyhood! Also these "mini"s require special foods, clothing, boots, etc. to protect them from the elements. I supply that. Big sigh!

There is one of these that I see advertising on Kijiji ALL the time, it makes me SO angry! They must have gotten a lot of bad press because they've stopped listing the name of their company, but I recognize their ads.

They have a very professional looking web site and specialize in these designer dogs. They claim they're a network of breeders, etc, etc. and they're inspected regularly, but I know the truth. Neighbors and family members have fallen for this BS.

It would be SO nice to have a list of known puppy brokers and mills but sadly it can't happen for the reasons stated. We just need to get a good web site that informs unsuspecting people about how to identify a puppymill and we need better legislation regarding puppymills in Canada.

The first clue is that if they advertise themselves as a "Network". Run and run fast.....and notify your local by-law enforcement and SPCA to put a watch on them.

I agree with the education portion, however there is only so much you can do without turning people completely off (moderation is key). Especially with your store you really have a fine line of educating vs turning people completely off by seeming like your preaching holier than art thou..and than no one will want to shop there.
